They are convenient, and they do save space. You just need to make sure you don't get the knock-off because if not done extremely carefully, the bag won't close right away. You have to get used to them. Linens-N-Things sells a multipack for like $20 with two medium, two large and two extra large, and you need to make sure you get the no-vacuum ones if you are traveling.

Yes, I use them all the time for my packing. I get the ones they sell at Target. You just put your clothes in, zip the bag (it has a double sealing zip) and then sit on the bag to push out all of the air.
They make packing easier because they keep your clothes together and if you are flying if the airport security folks open your bag they can see things without handling them.

Some advice on zip locks. If you want to save space, remember to open a small opening for the air when you squeeze. If not you'll just make a hole with that kinda pressure (ops). Anyway do remember to check the bags for holes or it'll just go back into the same shape after you make it air tight.

I travel all the time, like 2-3 weeks a month, and I use a small one for my undies and such... They do save space, but for me I use them more so that no one has to touch them when they open my suitcase for inspection... I find it a bit of a pain to use them for everything. HTH
