There's still a lot of people that are afraid of flying, especially since 9/11. And once the plane is on the ground the risk of an accident is drastically reduced. Sure there's still a small chance of something happening, but really once you're on the ground most things are past. You can't crash, you're down. If the landing gear and the tires survived touch down, they're likely to make it off the runway.

So, you have to be less intelligent to spend less on a plane ticket Paul? Maybe the clapping is because they're happy they didn't pay as much as you did. Oh wait, you were on that plane too? Hmmmm...

Maybe they're all smokers and excited to be back on the ground. I've never experienced that and I've flown quite a bit. I have heard people laugh and clap when the plane has a hard landing though.

This is a mysterious phenomenom which has crept into aviation in the past decade or so. It frankly gets on my nerves that people are so "whoop whoop" about it. It must be so annoying for the flightcrew, getting applauded for their day job, and as you say at the wrong time.
It used to be just an american thing, but now sadly it's crept over to europe.
But I only find it on the cheap charter airlines, where the passengers may not be so intelligent.
