She got spayed on Tuesday and has taken it pretty hard since. She doesn't want to move and when you pet her she acts annoyed. We took her to the vet today and he said it was just likely due to her poor recovery. Now she is home again and is having short labored breaths and is still not interested in moving. I don't know if she is just in pain or what. Has anyone else ever had a bad spay/neuter story they could share. I'm just afraid she is dying a slow death...

Hopefully she wasn't spayed at a discount vet clinic, this type of story is very common with cheap spay surgeries for a variety of reasons - poor anesthetics, poor surgical procedure resulting in infection or injury, poor animal handling causing emotional distress, etc. If she was spayed at a place like this get a second opinion from a reputable veterinarian.

If you had her spayed at a reputable clinic that sterilizes individual instrument and packs for each surgery, uses high-quality sedatives and gas anesthesia, and employs a capable staff to nurse the patient after surgery, then you may want to pursue the matter with the same clinic, as they are most familiar with your cat. Make sure they do everything they can to assure that your kitty is not having any unexpected complications after surgery.

Don't wait. Call the vet you went to and explain the current situation. i personally would take the cat to another vet. This does not sound at all normal and the breathing worries me a lot.

This is a young cat and assuming the cat was healthy, they tend to do well after spay/neuter. Sometimes, vets nick a kidney or other organ or the cat is in pain. Cat's can also get infections, post surgery.

This could be very serious so get some answers immediately.

I have had several cats spayed and have never had any problems as you say. Any time an animal is breathing strange like this it is a sign they are in extreme pain. Vets can be wrong!! You need to get to another vet. I think there has been some complications and she is in stress. Does she get up to pee and go? Is she drinking? Eating? If she is not eating and drinking a lot then she needs to go to another vet. do not take her back to the same one!

Go get another opinion from a different vet ASAP. They wont tell you they messed up on your cat. You can sue them. My mom did with my cat but different cirrcumstances. Good luck....oh and no that didnt happen when mine got spayed and I have 3 females....plus others in the past along with me working at a petstore for 7 years and taking cats to the vet to get them spayed and nuetered. The only thing I seen was sometimes some of them got a MINOR cold or sniffles which the doc gave us meds for.

You need to get on the phone and MAKE you vet explain whats going on. Labored breath is a sign of pain, or distress. Do not pick her up except if your vet wants you to bring her in. Leave her alone, make sure she has food, and water, and let her rest. YOU NEED TO DO THIS RIGHT NOW, call the vet or you may lose your pet ! OR GET TO A HOSPITAL, YOUR PET MAY BE IN GREAT PAIN !!!
