I would say that 95% of those who claim to be psychics are nothing more than SCAM artists who con people out of their money.

Greed and fame are very typical motives of these con artists, so skepticism must always be present at all times in order to safeguard you from your own vulnerability to seemingly such "incredible" feats being displayed by most.

But at the same time we cannot deny the existence of GENUINE psychic abilities which, many contend, are available to all human beings since we only use 10-12% of our brain. Indeed there are certain people out there who somehow have developed this "extrasensory perception" --so called "ESP" or the sixth sense-- capabilities that have been clinically tested and proven time and again. Or at least, their success ratio is better than a 75% of the time.

Some are sentient and attain it through "gut feelings" or hunches; others have visions and can "see" images; others have tactile abilities to determine illnesses and are able to "heal" the sick; etc.

On the other hand, I do not believe in mediums and other psychics who claim to be able to "speak to the dead". I can only think of them as a form of entertainment rather than being genuine because it is truly difficult to assess the veracity of what they say or do.

For me, the "real psychics" are those whose intentions are not self-serving but who willingly offer to HELP OTHERS and, more importantly, who DO NOT ACCEPT any payment for their skills and abilities.

Some law enforcement agencies [including the FBI] are known to use the assistance of psychics in resolving unsolved crimes. But they also have to sift through all those scam artists as well.

Peace be with you!

I knew you were going to ask that question... Actually, the history of the study of paranormal phenomenon in general is fascinating. Psychics have been used to explore spriitualism, quantum physics, and astral projection, among other topics. The work of the clairvoiyants, Besant and Leadbetter, published in 1908 under the title, "Occult Chemistry" provides a fascinating example of the interface between physical chemistry and the occult. The typical "street psychic" or palm reader or tarot card reader seldom, if ever, stands up to rigorous study, though. There are a number of theories that "explain" psychic phenomenon, ranging from the rediculous to the sublime. Nobel prize winners have even commented on the topic, with the most impressive discussion being a "quatum mechanics explanation of ESP" written jointly, back in the 60's, by Linus Pauling and Carl Jung. This study is buried in the German literature, published there, I feel certain, to ensure it never saw the light of day... Stage psychics are entertainers, not psychics. Don't look to them for proof of anything. For years, Duke University was the hotbed of psychic research in the US. Most of the work from the 60's and 70's at Duke was tainted by the reputation of one of the cheif researchers, Timothy Leary. During the cold war, both the US and Russia extensively studied psychics in an effort to find effective tools to gain or maintain political and economic power. To the best of my knowledge, most of the actual results remain classified on both sides of the ocean, suggesting that there could be something there... Probably the most interesting use of psychic power was revealed in the 70's, when it was alleged that a pair of psychics, working together, almost cornered the market in silver.
I, too, am sceptical, as it always seems that psychic power is being used to test psychic theory. I would like to see a study where scientific method, scientific tools, and credible scientists came together to investigate any psychic phenomenon. It seems (I am not certain that it is true, though) that credible scientists are all afraid to put their reputations on the line to investigate psychic phenomena.

I caught the Measles, German Measles, and pneumonia at the same time when I was eight. When I got well I was sensing things of the future and coming upon places I had never been yet recognizing everything and everyone there. Even the moves they made. These would put me in shock, then trigger off a light seizure. They decreased at 12 and stopped at 14.
I came across a report in the late 1990s that said people that have ESP usually have bad tempers. Those illnesses give me a terrible temper and it was when I got them under control that they stopped.
At the age of 12 one went off in N.A.S.A. physicists front yard and he took me to N.A.S.A. to be studied.
It was not until decades later that I found out that it had happened to a sister of mine too, during the same ages. So maybe it is inherited? But there are probably more fakes than real ones.

I believe some people are to general about some things and take a random stab in the dark e.g a male friend will be nice to you that is so broad it can happen to anyone but I believe that some people channel evil spirits and use their power sometime unknowingly to tell someone something. I believe in prophets and prophecies that are words God gives people but it should not be exploited as psychic.

I believe in psychics that can see ghosts. I've met some people that although they dont consider them selves psychics they can see ghosts and describe exactly the way they look, one of them was also an artist and could draw the ghost.

We have a friend who is a psychic, what an amazing gift this man has. It was him who set me off tracing my family history, we sat at his house having a cuppa with him, and totally out of the blue he said to me "Martha says thank you for the love you gave her grand-daughter". I laughed and said how nice I don't know Martha or her grand daughter. He said you will know of her soon.
I didn't think of it for a long time after, and he phoned me and said have you started your family history yet, I hadn't but I did start it a week later I am hooked.
I found out that my mums gran 'Martha' was born in 1813 and died in 1889 in the USA, her grand daughter 'my mum' lived with us for 14 years before she died, I had cared for her 24/7 for the last 4 years of her life because she was so poorly with emphysema.
So yes I believe.

Yes, and so do several law enforcement agencies, which have employed genuine psychics from time to time.

If they're good enough to convince the cops, they're good enough for me. Some have helped solve several "unsolvable" cases.

Unfortunately, the fakes ruin the whole rap.

I believe there are people who have genuine ESP ability. But they are few and far between. Most of what you may see on TV are probably frauds (personally I can't stand Sylvia Browne). I don't think there are psychics are 100% accurate though, and its probably a sporadic or spontaneous thing.

Deuteronomy 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
Deu 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
Deu 18:12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

I would love to believe in psychic abilities. But decades of research in parapsychology have given us no reason to believe such abilities exist. The first parapsychologists thought they had found psychic ability until they realized their subjects were cheating. Why were they cheating? Because subjects got paid to be in the experiments.

Indeed if psychic abilities did exist, any person able to demonstrate it under controlled conditions (i.e. no cheating), would win the Nobel Prize in Physics.
