My aunt has a long-haired chihuahua, he is about 6 years old. He had fleas and was given the flea bath medication. My aunt says he got a bit scabby but she put baby oil on him and his skin got better and she is "sure" the fleas are gone. But now he is rubbing his back/side on her wooden chair and his hair is falling out a lot. He has had no changes in his diet (which might suggest an allergic reaction), what else could be wrong with him??? Thanks!

p.s I know "take him to the vet" is the right answer, which is what I would do if it were my dog but it isn't :P

well, I will skip the take it to the vet, since you already acknowledged thats what should be done. Flea baths don't really work that well. They may kill some fleas that are on the pet, but since most of the fleas live in the environment ( meaning your Aunt's house - good luck telling her that!) it doesn't really do much good.. Go down to the vets and get some Frontline, Revolution or Advantage to put on the dog. It will kill fleas for 30 days, then your aunt will have to go buy some......make sure she doesn't get the Hartz stuff in the grocery store or Walmart because it doesn't work. Then sit her down, give her a beer or martini and tell her she needs to treat the house and yard to get rid of the flea infestation.......then run like hell.

Then make sure your aunt takes him to the vet. Flea baths don't work. To prove this to her, give the dog a comb with a flea comb and show her the black specks on the comb - these are flea dirts. The bath will have washed them off, but give it a couple of days and the dirts will be back.

Hair loss from the back end is a classic sign of flea allergy. Tell her to take the dog to the vet so she can get some PROPER flea medication, like Frontline- and while she's there get the dog's anal glands checked because this is probably the reason the dog is dragging his butt on the floor.

Good. Tell your aunt to take the dog to a vet.

Sounds like some kind of allergies. She could try Benadryl, but taking the dog to the vet is the best option.

Yes, tell your aunt to take him to the vet or he will never get better. Trying to save a buck and making this poor dog suffer.

She exasperated the problem by putting baby oil on him. UGH.

normally doggies have not got lazy days. i could take your pup in and get him checked just to confirm. whether he has been getting his photos he could have picked something up. I had an identical element happen to my german shepherd pup while he become 11 weeks. He in basic terms began performing torpid and would not consume. I referred to as the vet and ended up taking him in. stable element I did because of the fact he examined useful for parvo even inspite of the undeniable fact that he had already gotten 2 instruments of photos and become getting his third in purely some day. He become taken care of for parvo and survived because of the fact it become caught early. So just to confirm take him and and get him checked. I later discovered that the completed muddle of doggies mine got here from ended up having parvo and mine become the only one to proceed to exist because of the fact I took him in earlier the fairly undesirable indicators began. ideal of success alongside with your pup and that i actually wish he's in basic terms having an off day that it is not something severe.

he may be having a reaction to the baby oil. If she doesn't want to go to the vet tell her to try some hypoallergenic shampoo and to be certain she gets a clean rinse. there is also a treatment for what is called "hot spots" that can be bought at any pet store she may want to give that a try for it is great for itching.

Why is your crazy aunt putting baby oil on the poor dog? You should call animal control and stop the abuse ...
