I want to buy a .40 caliber pistol for target shooting. There are so many different ones available it is difficult to decide. Factors that are important to me: low recoil, compact size, magazine capacity and price. Could you please recommend a pistol? could you also give me a price you believe I will pay for your recommendation? thank you in advance.

I would recommend the Springfield Armory XD. They have less felt recoil than other .40 cals, they have different sizes and the service 4" model holds 12+1. The sub-compact holds 9+1 and 12+1 with the extended mags. They are roughly 500 - 590 depending on state and county. I live in Cook County IL and pay up to 75 bucks more than most people.
I will also suggest that if you never shot a .40 cal before do so before you buy. I made a mistake in buying a S&W Sigma 40VE and not only did it jam every third shot faithfully but the snap recoil of the .40 was hurting my wrist and arm. The XD .40 in 4" is a little better in line of snap than the S&W but I still perfer .45acp and 9mm. 9mm is also a little cheaper to buy by about 4 bucks. (based on Wal-Mart prices).
Hope this helps...Good Luck and happy shooting.

Jess - See, legal and responsible US citizens are licenesed to buy, own, and use firearms. It is called the Second Amendment right. This is the right that backs up the others. Not to mention that most states that have Conceal Carry also require that those idividuals take safety classes to gain the CCW permit. Living in IL I cannot carry but I am required to have a FOID card.

Springfield XD-40, hands down. I paid $325 for mine. Mag holds 12 rounds. Bar-none the most durable pistol available.

Sig Sauer p226. If it's good enough for the Navy Seals it's gotta be good. Sig Sauer are great dependable guns and you can't go wrong with any model you pick with Sig.

The .40 S&W round is not low on recoil. In fact it is greater than the 9mm in recoil, but slightly lower in muzzle velocity. I like the full size Glock model 22, but if you want a compact model with reduces recoil buy the Glock model 23C {the c stands for compensated model.] The model has matching longitudinal cuts in the barrel and slide to reduce recoil. Price is about $ 575 [$75 more than the regular model 23].

you do not need anything fancy like a desert eagle.the glock mdl 22 has mags that will hold 15 rounds.they are very easy to take apart.you get what you pay for. if it is a low price the gun will be very poor quality.you can get a glock from 450-499.it is the gun the many departments are using.

I'm a revolver guy myself, but I got a Heckler & Koch USP 40 for one of my kids a few years ago, and it seems to be a pretty nice pistol, especially since he's wrong-handed and picky. The modular design letting him pick the variations he wanted were a nice touch. It runs in the $700+ range.

Beretta makes a variant of the m9 in 40 cal, i know cuz DNR uses them here in maryland. Sig makes a great 40 cal and so does springfield in their XD. it really depends on the amount you have to spend.

9mm is cheaper to shoot and has less recoil, and can hold more in a magazine, so if all your doing is target shooting that would be a better choice. its even well suited for self defense, unlike what others say.
