Most states have a required liability period for a breeder/pet store, and if you take it to the vet in the first twenty four to forty eight hours, and the vet finds any problem, the breeder/pet store that sold the puppy to you is responsible for that problem. Also, it's best to know that you are getting a healthy dog, and that there are no conditions that you weren't told about such as heart murmurs, or infections when you purchased the dog. The first time you bring your puppy to the vet is also an excellent time to make sure that all the puppy shots are up to date, and allow your puppy to meet the vet, in a non-emergency time, which will allow a less stressful visit the next time you go in.

Because dog breeders can be like horse traders...not all breeders are created equal. If I am getting a puppy from a *very* reputable breeder then I don't ALWAYS take it literally on the way home from picking it up, but if it is from a somewhat or very untrustworthy source, ie a person who asks you no questions and only wants the puppy gone or only wants money then I take the puppy immediately to make sure it isn't sick, because if it is I stop the check and call the breeder immediately to work out payment of vet care for the puppy because I always get at very least a verbal guarentee that the puppy is in perfect health and free of known genetic defects...but that's because we have a habit of rescue-ing dogs from backyard breeders who have no business breeding. It's just for the peace of mind for me, it's to socialize the puppy to the vet's office for the first time, and it's usually the first or second trip for puppy shots and a worming. Having a dog that likes going to the vet is very important, almost as important as having a dog that's healthy!

Because no matter what the person says that you get the dog from, you should get an opinion from your own vet. Good breeders REQUIRE it in the contract. Shelters can miss things, and most BYB do not take puppies to the vet at all. You need to knwo if there is anything wrong in case you need to return the puppy, or anything else.
Ideally, you pick up the puppy when you have a scheduled vet visit and take it DIRECTLY to the vet after getting it, along with all the records you have gotten.
Then, if the dog is sick or has parasites, you will not be bringing that into your house for days before!!!!!

Well, if you are purchasing a dog from a breeder, it is usually in the contract that you MUST take it to the vet to verify that it is healthy and with no issues or problems that would make you want to return the dog in a week.

If you are getting a dog from the pound or shelter, its best to take it by the vet to be sure it is healthy, does not have fleas or ticks, intestinal parasites (some of which people can get), not sneezing, coughing or vomitting.

You need to know if the dog has any health problems that need attention. If you purchased the dog, the breeder needs to know that there was a problem. Some dog health conditions can also affect people. To keep everyone happy and healthy, it's best to visit the vet first off.

First and foremost, to make sure it's healthy. If you buy from a responsible breeder, or (I know in my county it's this way) adopt from a shelter, you usually have a short period of time (72 hours or so??) to take the puppy/dog to a vet. If there is a previously undetected health problem, the animal can be returned if so desired.

You want to have your vet check to make sure it is healthy. The breeder should have already started the pup on its shots. The vet can check for worms and other internal parasites. If the vet finds something seriously wrong with the pup, you should take it back to the breeder. No reputable breeder will knowingly sell a sick pup. All reputable breeders also have their pups check by a vet before selling them.

The way I've always understood it is that you take your new pet to the vet so the animal can get its shots and in general just get checked out to make sure nothing's wrong with it. Besides that, it's probably a good idea to have a vet picked out for the animal so you'll know who to go to if your pet gets sick.

first of all, you SHOULD take a dog to the vet asap, to check if they have heart worms, fleas, or other things a dog could have.
It also needs to get shots so they dont develop problems in the future.
You dont HAVE to take your dog to the vet, but it is highly reccomended, for the reasons above .

Good luk when u do get a dog!

It's always a good idea to have a new puppy checked out and your vet to verify that the puppy is indeed healthy. It's pretty much a standard thing to do with any new pup.
