Ford Ka.
The cars themselves are cheap, I got a 2004 for £2199.
Petrol is cheap and lasts a while. I think its 50mpg?
Insurance was fully comp £1200 ( You may think its expensive but I got a quote for a MG MGF that was £8000! )
The tax is cheap as well. Depending on your area apparently.

Toyota Yaris - They cost £3000+ to buy but everything from then on is VERY cheap!

Avoid buying cheap modded cars. Yes they may look nice but the engine will be thrashed, the interior will smell and it will drive like a rickety tin.

Pick up an old Volvo 240 or 740 and don't worry about the mileage on the odometer. Non turbos will return about 32MPG and price will be under $1000. They will go over 500,000 miles and most have been well taken care of (not exactly something you go racing around in).

Don't bother getting collision coverage since you will pay for your car every two or three years and it will take a lot of damage and still be drivable. Also these cars fall into a low risk category (depends on your insurance company) because their fatal crashes can be counted on one hand.

This isn't easy as u will have to take into account where u live, as the post code changes things as does the insurance group, security the car has and any points on ur licence. It will be cheaper if u have a garage. Tell the insurance of any mods the car may have, if u don't then this makes Ur insurance invalid. If u don't do many miles a year then tell Ur insurance this as it may help. Hope this helps

Rover 111, vauxhall corsa, ford fiesta, citroen saxo, Peugeot 106, 206 and 306, renault clio. Can get a good example of all of these for £2000 - £3000 and a decent one for even less.

If a little more, go for a yaris, a newer style fiesta (02 onwards), or a citroen c2.

Decide what's most important - power steering? electric windows? central locking? because chances are you won't be able to get all three in a first car.

Good luck :)

A small Japanese car. Suzuki Swift, etc. Look in a price guide for older cars and check the insurance ratings.

You need one with a small engine - 1 litre or less. The VW Polo is reliable and cheap to run.

The cheapest would be your 2007 Nike Airs....

Seriously though, anything cheap isn't going to be reliable. Consider an older import......
