In my experience, my children rarely behave bad in public, because I make them behave when they are home. However on the few occasions that I've had to, it was as simple as "if you misbehave, we go home." I have left carts half full with groceries, and we have left birthday parties early. After a couple of times, they got the hint, and they knew I say what I mean, and I mean what I say!

I used to be a science communicator at a science centre and when a child was engaging in unsafe, disruptive or abusive behavior I would first hunt down the parent and ask them to handle the situation. However, If the parent was unwilling to intervene I would speak to the child and ask them to stop and explain why what they were doing was not proper. If the child persisted, I would speak to the parent one more time and say that if they were unwilling to manage their child they would be asked to leave.
Finally if the problem persisted I would escort the parent and child discreetly from the science centre.
The fact is that if a child is being abusive to another child, acting inappropriate or unsafe and the parent is unwilling to act the behavior need to be corrected. This is especially if there is another child, at risk.
With my own children it is a far different scenario. In public they are never more than a couple feet away, and know to mind their manners and keep their hands to themselves. If they chose not to behave we simply go hom and they go into time out.

I am not going to tell you that my children are "perfect." I will tell you that whan I am in a store, restaurant or other public place and we see children that are misbehaving, I quietly point it out to my children. They are 11, 3 and 1. Obviously my one year old doesn't get it, but I tell the other two,"See how disruptive and disrespectful those children are being? That's why mommy doesn't want you to behave like that." Usually it is in a louder voice so the parent of the children can hear me. If they aren't around, my kids still get the point. I haven't had a lot of acting up since I was given that advice because it helps my kids see improper behavior without having to tell them they are being naughty.

Yes, it's very easy. You REMOVE the child from the are, take the child home, get a sitter and return to whatever activity you were doing in pubklic without the child...

My son is 3 and a few months ago (Right after he turned 3) he tried to have a tantrum in the grocery store and I got down to his level, gently, but firmly grabbed his shoulders and looked him in the eye and told him in a stern voice "You ARE NOT going to act like this!" and I plopped him in the seat of the cart and buckled him in. That is his time out in the store...he absolutely HATES riding in the cart, but until he starts to behave (Which doesn't take long) that's where he has to sit.

IMO NO. I hate it while i'm in a save & ppl are letting their little ones be brats and throwing loud obnoxious suits. I continuously prefer to furnish that youngster a reliable swat on the @ss. no longer something incorrect with being a consistant parent while coaching babies it is not okay to misbehave in public.

Kind of. My daughter once threw a tantrum mimicking what she'd seen so many other children do. She was 2 years old and very precocious. I just stared at her as did all other people walking by in a very upscale store. She stopped after 2-3 minutes out of embarrassment.
