You can do it, if you are doing things like local TV commercials and independent film, and local theater. I don't think it is possible to have a Hollywood acting career AND run a dental practice, because Hollywood actors can work long hours filming, and have to travel across the country to promote their films, and around the world sometimes to film on location. But the chances of anyone reaching this level in their acting career are very slim.

As far as smart actresses, they do indeed exist. The smarter you are, the more challenging roles you can take on. I heard an interview with Rob Schneider (of all people, lol) and he suggested that anyone who wants to act should get a college degree first, because they will be able to do su much more with their career, such as writing scripts for their own movies.

Oh, and it's not really true that dentists can set their own hours. Sure, you are running the business, but just try to tell your employess that tomorrow they are working 2pm-10pm because you have an acting gig in the morning. Or calling up your patients for the next week and canceling on them.

I also say go for it, as a dentist you'll make good money...and you'll can basically set your own hours right? so that leaves the flexibility of going to auditions when needed. (Not that money is the only important thing, but it sure is nice when you can have a job that you both enjoy + money stability, and it can also financially support your acting endeavors). I'm going to do the same thing, I'm not sure what kind of job I'd like to go into yet (something I really care about though), but I know for sure I really want to pursue music seriously as my "other career" lol.

GO FOR IT!

Jennifer Anniston worked as a hairstylist while she was pursuing her acting career!
That would be the smart thing to do! Dont do the starving actress thing!

Elvis Presely started out as a truck driver. Then one day, he recorded a song and we know what happened.

Bob Hope was originally a professional boxer. Good thing he didn't win very much, because he became a household name as something else.

And there are many other celebrities who had humble beginnings. Very few celebrities were born with a silver spoon in their mouthes. You need to earn a living before you hit it big.
