The church I attend allows (encourages) people to dance during the worship service. What do you think of that?

When the Holy Spirit moves, what can man say against that. It is wonderful you have a church that is open to the Spirit.

I'm not a dancer but the Bible is full of examples of people and even commands to dance before the Lord (eg Psalm 149). I think it becomes a problem when it distracts others from worshipping God, such as in a service where there are a lot of people who are uncomfortable with dancing and prefer to worship quietly. It doesn't sound like that is the case in your church though.

...I never thought much about it one way or the other until I went with a missionary group to Jamaica 10 yrs ago...we were ministering high in the mountains to the inner island citizens at some of the most fascinating places I've ever been....we attended some of the church services they conducted...Wow, it was amazing...the Holy Spirit was really there and people were singing and dancing... it was all so cool...nothing ridiculous...it was joyous and I sat in "awe"...in reality, I learned more from the Jamaican people in praise and worship than I brought there with me in the first place...

If you are outgoing and social, you might want to join a Christian group, such as the Pentecostals, which encourage that in their church services. If you are an inner Light, reflective person, you might want to join a group such as the Friends (Quakers) who sit quietly and Commune in spirit and in soul with God and with each other for about one hour or more. I have been to both and enjoy both in the 200 plus churches that my wife and I have visited; we never had any desire to join any of them; as we are inner-Spirit Directed always in Spirit and in Truth. A middle-road compromise might be a Presbyterian church or a Mormon (LDS, or COC) church.

Being a professional, dance band driving drummer; I enjoy the excitement of making people move physically and have played some very energetic blues, jazz, rock music in different church concerts. However, I prefer the much more moving, driving, lasting quiet God-consciousness that can be done in Quaker churches or in your own Christian Family Fellowship Worship and Study group in your own home with relatives and a few invited friends.

The progressive trend in religion is in doing away with the obsolete priesthoods and practicing the presence of God in Jesus Christ in Spirit just as and just where you are and at any and all times. "P.R.A.Y." I use to mean "Personal Religionist Association --You !" and "P.R.A.Y.I.N.G." as "Personal Religionist Association --You inviting now God !" I just came up with that as I was composing this message. Copyleft 2007, all lefts reserved. :))

Personally, I think that churches should restrict dancing to single adults over age 18 in their church clubs; as most dancing is still primarily "legalized public vertical sex". I do not think that married men and women should be bumping and grinding in churches; that is done enough in the many bars and secular clubs.

Back in the times of Jesus Incarnate, there was "legalized" temple prostitution to keep the priests happy. So we are morally progressing somewhat. The growing Islamic movements may drive more seculars to be more moral by force IF the larger number of Christians can not lovingly persuade others to voluntarily be more moral and ethical. We will soon see. Count the costs.

Next we might visit a very fundamental or non-mental church where they both dance and then roll on the floor after handling poisonous snakes; that should be interesting. (just joking)

If it's a spontaneous thing, and there's room, why not? If it's truly in a spirit of joy, and not a group of certain people engaging in "dig me" superspirituality, there's no problem. Also if they're not *forcing* people to do what they don't want to. If there's room for everyone, the quieter as well as the dancers, why not.

David danced before the Lord with all his might, you know. Michal made fun of him and was cursed with sterility for the rest of her life. What was David's answer to her criticism? "I will make myself even more undignified than this." Paul says we are fools for Christ's sake--which is a lot better than being a fool all on your own hook.

I believe people will do all kinds of things including dancing when they have been touched by the Holy Ghost. Jesus came to set people free, and I believe that includes the freedom to praise Him in church. Too often people are held back from praising Him because they fear what others might think of them, and I believe that's so sad. God bless you!!!

David danced before the Lord
I think it is a joyful way to praise him
I have danced when I felt his spirit and it was awesome
I have been slain with his spirit seen angels lots of them and I was in the middle of all of them and the presence of God lifted me into a place of pure joy and laughter
what a way to go I say

I believe that if the HOLY SPIRIT, moves you to dance...then dance! If some preacher tells me to dance.....NOPE, it is NOT going to happen!

I listen to the Holy Spirit and move accordingly. If HIS joy is so great within my spirit....I freely let go and let God have His way! During these times, I have experienced, laughter in which I could NOT control, peace which I have NEVER experienced in any other situation, slain in the "spirit" and I have sang and praised Him through music!

I encourage all to let go...just let God move you! These are precious moments but, only if the Holy spirit is directing me! Not man!

nothing wrong with it, some people prefer a church service were the guy up front talks and sends you home. some are much more lively. people do this and God causes people to do it.

some people do it for show though. but hating it or laughing at it is a bad move as you will have God to deal with, if you got a problem with the church then its better you find another.

Texts like the following are used to support that kind of thing:

Psa 149:3 Let them praise his name in the dance: Let them sing praises unto him with timbrel and harp.
Psa 149:4 For Jehovah taketh pleasure in his people: He will beautify the meek with salvation.
Psa 149:5 Let the saints exult in glory: Let them sing for joy upon their beds.
Psa 149:6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, And a two-edged sword in their hand;

But there at at least THREE problems here:

1. semantics - the word 'dance' in v. 3 was a type of musical INSTRUMENT, similar to a pipe.

2. This is POETRY. It uses hyperbole. That's a figure of speech.

3. It's taken out of context. If this actually means dancing, then v. 5 says that the the accompanying singing should be done on their beds and v. 6 says that they must have a two-edged sword in their hands.

So, let me see. Bring your beds to church, jump up and down on it while you sing loudly and danced on it, all the while waving a two-edges sword. Very Christian that!

Was that type of thing allowed in the Old Testament worship service? No, but it was allowed as social entertainment. Well then, was it allowed in the New Testament? Again, no.

I think it's presumption. The temple of God has been converted into a dance hall; that is to say, instead of the church changing the world, the world is changing the church.
