peter abelard developed the idea because he was unhappy with the notion of unbaptised infants going straight to hell.

st. bernard of clairvaux thought that hell was the right place for unbaptised infants: they were unbaptised.

(note that it is _saint_ bernard of clairvaux, but just peter abelard).

the future saint benedict xvi sees no need to further acknowledge peter abelard's soft-heartedness.
