You know what I'm talking about. 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, The Va Tech shootings and the War in Iran are all evidence of God's being miffed about something or other.

Is it a general Christian Doctrine, or a Fundie thing, or just a couple of money grubbing wackos?

Would you, as a Christian, picket the funerals of American soldiers killed in the Iraq War? If so, why?

Even as a child, many of the ideologies of "organized" religion were disturbing to me. That, I think, is what makes it all the more poignant that extremists (such as those you mention in your question) can find followers and supporters among not only adults, but adults who hold influential and powerful positions in society; adults who have the ability to impose laws, command wars..... and, literally, destroy the world that belongs to all of us. If the God "they" espouse was a Human Being (instead of the Supreme Being they proclaim him to be), he could easily be grouped with the most sadistic, malicious minds known throughout history..... that is, if we are to believe the atrocities attributed to him by these "people". And, Mad.... people is all they are.... people like you and me. Of course, they claim to have a special knowledge of what God wants.... a unique rapport (so to speak) that's denied to the rest of us. (Why is that, d'ya think?) They tell us they speak to God... and, by God... he replies. So here I am... risking (once again) permanent incarceration in my local Psych ward... to make public some of what "my" God has communicated to me, because.... I can't see why it should not be as credible as what he's communicated to other "people". Anyway, my God says we should not engage in the practice of killing each other (nor, especially, each others' innocent children) - regardless of how "different" we are...... My God wants us to protect our resources to the best of our ability, and not carelessly abuse them..... My God doesn't mind if we don't bow, grovel, and give constant praise (in whatever form) to him... (He's not that vain.) Rather, he prefers we show as much kindness as we can possibly muster up to the living, breathing creatures residing on this Earth - including ourselves...... My God feels it isn't bright to donate any portion of our incomes to those who have lifestyles more luxurious than our own (particularly, in his name..... or, with hopes of buying a place in Heaven). Instead, he thinks it far more intelligent to share what we can with those less fortunate than ourselves.
So, in view of these things... and the many other things I've been told by my God.... it has been necessary for me (in order to avoid conflicts of interest ) to reject organized religions in favor of my own spirituality. Besides, "my" God has also said, in so many words, that Robertson, Phelps (and others like them) are full of shiiiiiiiiit, and I, for one, believe him.

Well, Steve, you know how I feel about this from how I answered one of your other posts. But to reiterate, Robertson gets his rocks off speaking for god, and has made a living doing so. I can only imagine how many millions of dollars his pathetic claims have brought him. As for Phelps, that entire family has been brainwashed by him, and it is sad because the children seem like otherwise bright, articulate people who could be great assets to their communities. Fortunately, the courts have ruled that the family's harassment of the families of fallen soldiers came with a price. I just hope the restitution is actually paid. Every asset they own should be taken, auctioned, and given to the family of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder.

Unfortunately, I doubt they will see a dime. And apparently the ruling will not change the family's behavior. And article featured on CNN.com reads, " The church had made a new sign to carry after the jury's decision, said his daughter, Margie Phelps.

"Our message is 'Thank God for 10.9 [million dollars],' " she said.

"By that mechanism [the award], the entire world will look over and see that America is doomed and that in doomed America there is no such thing as religious liberty."

As for your question.... I cannot speak for Christians, since I am not one of them. However, I CAN attest to the fact that I have personally heard many, many Christian (as well as peoples from other faiths) rejoice in the misfortunes of their [perceived] enemies.

lol!!!
Pat Robertson is a sick joke and a cynical litlle man (my detractors, before you foam at your mouth in righteous indignation, please check his Liberia record, 'nuff said), as for Fred Phelps, he gives ugly worms a bad name, as for his *people* picketing soldiers's funerals... I am bewildered at how much hate people of god harbor in the name of what is the paragon of uncoditional love. Pissing on the graves of most brave of us who made the ultimate sacrifice is beyond human decency, but then, I am assuming those ugly, hateful moaning asswipes are human, it appears to be a mistake. Windmills of god grind slow, but they grind exceeding fine. Neither is a Christian and both are prime examples of what happens when hate runs rampant and is *justified* by the *word*god*...
pathetic indeed...
nah, god is not the ultimate terrorist, those who hate in his name are....
