My sadistic father made a ritual of having me kneel at the foot of my bed whenever he administered yet another beating.

I was once mistaken for a wanted fugitive because my car was a particular make and color and because I wear thick glasses. The arresting officer made me kneel, with my hands on top of my head, while he kept a shotgun pointed at my head. I could see both of us were terrified of each other. After it was eventually determined I was the wrong guy, we had breakfast together (his treat) and both laughed at how afraid we had been of each other.

My late sister got married in a Catholic church. I could not make myself go inside because I have a profound fear of both crowds and churches. I watched the ceremony from outside, through an open side door. After the wedding, after everybody had already filed out of the church, I wanted to test myself and see if I could force myself to endure being inside a church. With fear of ecclesastical retribution and visions of the Inquisitions filling my head, I dashed inside and discovered the nifty padded rail behind each pew, obviously used for kneeling. I assumed the prayer position and was congratulating myself that I hadn't yet been struck by lightning, when I felt the hair rise on the back of my neck. I looked to the right and there was an enormous statue of the Virgin Mary, in an alcove where She had been hidden from the door. The statue's eyes bore into me and made me feel extremely unwelcome. I swear the Mother of Christ actually scowled at me. I dashed back out of that church, skipped the wedding reception and went straight home. Does that count as kneeling before the Virgin Mary? It was certainly a most unpleasant experience.

I kneel all the time. In my culture, one kneels before elders if they are seated. It is a sign of respect.
