My puppy, Baloo, already knows not to poop or pee inside the house during the day, because we keep the door open for him. He only does it inside sometimes. The problem is that at night he pees and poops normally in a little area in his room, he doesn't know he's supposed to hold it until the morning like he should, and I don't know how to teach him. We do not want to put him into a cage, whatever it takes to not have to put him into a cage. What have you done with your dog?

Thinking of a crate as a cage is partially why you are so against it. A crate, in my opinion, is almost a necessity to house break a dog. Being that the dog will come to think of it instinctively as a den, and dogs loathe going to the bathroom in their den.

Heres how I am currently crate training my Boxer Puppy.

#1 Buy a crate ofcourse and make sure its only big enough for the dog to stand up, sit down, and turn around when it has too.

#2 Start off putting him in the crate in small intervals, so he can get used to being inside.

#3 When he is inside praise him and treat him so he will think of the crate of something that brings goodness.

#4 NEVER put him in the crate for doing something wrong, he will start taking the crate as something bad. If he has an accident, take it as just that, an accident and move on.

#5 Probably the most important thing to remember is to take him outside immediately after you remove him from the crate. Do not play with him, do not let him walk around. Take him right out side with his favorite treat. Once he goes praise him like he won the lottery and give him his treat. Then IMMEDIATELY take him back inside. Do not play with him. Play with him once you get him back in the house.

A good thing to remember is when he starts going in the crate on his own to praise and give him a treat.

Dont think of the crate as cruel. Its actually a great comfort to the dog once he gets accustom to it. Cruel would only be locking him in it for a very long period of time.

Crate or Cage training is the answer. It doesn't need to be a long term fix. By putting him inside a crate before bed, you are limiting his space. Dogs dogs don't like to make messes where they sleep so they will hold it. When you take him out of the crate in the morning, the first thing you need to do is physically take him outside where you want him to go. After he does his business, then bring him back in. We did this with our puppy for the first 3 or 4 months and then she was trained. I didn't even need to put her in a crate at night because she knew where to go.

It's not cruel or inhumane. Dogs are related to wolves. Wolves sleep in a den. Same thing as a crate.

Why don't you want to crate your dog? It a great training tool. We leave the door open to it when we are home and the even sleep in it then. Their own private spot. We NEVER use it for punishment so it is never a negative thing for them.

hes only a baby! he has to grow a bit to be able to hold his bladder all night! sounds like hes doing a good job with it during the day. remember that real babies are in nappies for over a year, dogs on the other hand take about 6 months to fully house train.hes doing real good for a pup! i had to take my pup out through the night till he could hold it and wait, have patience,it will happen.

Install a dog door going out to a securely fenced area. We have rectangular pipe panels covered with chain link fencing that bolt together to make kennels. We have three set up like that and it sure makes life easy.

It is not a "cage" it is a Crate. He has too much space, so he has no clue he should be holding it. The crate use encourages him to not soil the "den" area. If you use a room, it will take a lot longer!!!!!!!
