The souls of believers go immediately into God's presence.
"to be absent from the body" is "to be present with the Lord"
The Bible, Paul's Second letter to the Corinthians, chapter 5 verse 8.

The souls of unbelievers go immediately to Eternal punishment.
"it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgement"
The Bible, the Book of Hebrews, Chapter 9 verse 27.

It is therefore a matter of great urgency that people prepare for that day by fleeing to Jesus Christ for salvation.

I'm a Christian
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (it's up for debate exactly what that means...)
When you die you will go to heaven to be with God, at some point there will be a new heaven and new earth, but nobody knows (not even the most highly educated Christian) what that means...seek it out for yourself.
When you die, you will be destroyed. I have studied, and can not find a verse that says a persons soul will be condemed for ETERNITY to ETERNAL torment. Simply put, if you reject God on Earth, he will deny you the bliss of having an eternal spirit. I guess if you're an atheist, this is already what you believe, so it works out for all.

"Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement,.." the bible says we will all face our Judge, but we have a Saviour, so that need only be fearful without Him:

".. so Christ (Jesus) was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people ; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvationto those who are waiting for Him" HE WAS DEAD BUT IS ALIVE FOREVER

Ecclesesiastes 3:18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God [1] might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts. 19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. 20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

Simple, When you are dead you are dead.

This is true no matter what anyone says:

You go to eternal heaven if you believe that Jesus, who is God, died for our sins on the cross and rose again. If a person rejects that belief to their dying breath, they go to eternal hell, and there is no second chance.

What your religion says is irrelevant. There is no "after life".
We die, we rot in the ground or are cremated. There are no other options (unless of course you've been eaten by a large carnivore...)
