I second Churrascaria Plataforma. They actually have 2 locations (one on 49th and one Downtown).
Also, if money is not an issue and you want bad-@ss memories, (it's not in Times Square) but NINJA: The Restaurant is one amazing place. The entire place is made up of a matrix of private rooms that can handle from 2 people up to 25, and you'll never forget having a ninja for a waiter. It's on 25 Hudson St down in Lower Manhattan. http://www.ninjanewyork.com/
If you're not looking to break the bank, just take a walk over to 9th ave between 45th and 55th streets and there are plenty of places, and they all post their menus outside for you to look at. I am sure one will catch your eye.
And yeah, avoid chain places and tourist traps. You're here now so try something unique, you could get that chain food at home.

If you're a tourist then you will definitely want to make a stop at Carmine's in time square on 44th Street. It's a tourists haven, while remaining a hotspot for locals as well. It's a huge part of the Broadway Theater scene so out-of-towners love going there and getting into the atmosphere and ambience. It's a two floored, nice restaurant. The style of food is southern Italian with family portions, which means that you get a whole lot of bang for your buck. Pastas are usually cooked a bit on the al dente side, but the appetizers and entrees are satisfactory. There are some decent wines served as well. Reservations are strongly recommended though some nights they do not accept them and you need to show up super early. But if you are looking for the tourist experience... that's the spot
Down the street from Carmine's (still on 44th Street but more to the east side, still in Times Square) is Virgil's BBQ. Its a huge tourist spot, two levels and great comfort food. Again portions are big and again there is a full bar. Reservations are probably better than not.

Avoiding chain restaurants like the plague is one way to find a good restaurant in almost any big city. This is doubly true of NYC. And from my few visits to Times Square, it's absolutely INFESTED with chain restaurants.
Now, it's not exactly "bad-@$$," but a nice restaurant not too far from Times Square is a little vegetarian Asian place called Zen Palate (www.zenpalate.com). It's on 46th Street at 9th Avenue. If that's not your thing, 46th Street between Broadway and 9th Avenue has a ton of restaurants, and you're sure to find something that suits you.
If you want to do something touristy, take a bus tour of TV shows or one of those double-decker "see the city" tours. Don't go to a chain restaurant that you can visit in your home town.

There is a restaurant directly across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral that has very unusual seating, it is like a tray that you slide out to sit down and then pull it in toward you after sitting and this is your "table". They have a picture on the wall of Sarah Jessica Parker filmed eating there for an episode of Sex and the City. It's like a burger joint, good food and excellent service.

If you like BBQ, then Dallas BBQ in Time Square is really good. I have been a few times now. It is really large and it is across from Madam Tussauds wax museum. The portions are big and the food is yummy, particularly the pulled pork and the cornbread. They are also known for their frozen drinks, also very large. Anyway, it is reasonably priced and fun.

Churrascaria Plataforma is near Times Square. On my holiday I went there and we were so impressed. The service was great and the food and drinks were incredible. It's a Brazillian restaurant, where people are at your table constantly with food, like cheese bread, fried bananas, and your choice of lots and lots of meat. Wasn't cheap, but it was incredibly good fun and so tasty!

My favorite hole-in-the-wall is Shanghai Mong at 30 W. 32nd St.

But for the famous high end I would choose Chez Josephine, The Rainbow Room Grill or Sardi's.

Dave and Busters? It's sort of like a Chucky Cheese for adults. It's got all the american faves like steak, ribs, chicken, beer and liquor but they also have arcade games and racing games and stuff like that. Never been, but it seems interesting to me.
Also never been here either, but maybe the Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant?
Dunno how badass any of these places are gonna be, but badass and touristy don't really go together...lol

I ate at the Olive Garden italian restaurant located near Times Square, because the other restaurants at Times Square were too expensive.
