Nearly 100 people gathered at Tucson police headquarters Friday to protest the department's recent announcement that it would no longer call immigration officials to schools or churches.
The protesters, holding American flags and signs that read "Enforce our laws" and "Zero tolerance for illegals," walked to police headquarters at 270 S. Stone Ave. from Armory Park in an effort to change the policy.Assistant Police Chief Roberto Villaseñor went outside shortly after 10 a.m., thanked the crowd for their civic participation and told them the department would take the petition into consideration. But he said the department wouldn't change its policy.
"Our main mission is not enforcement of immigration laws, our main mission is public safety," he said. "There's federal agencies that are tasked with that."http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/210932

The department has officially modified its policy to include language that prohibits police officers from calling immigration officials to schools or churches.

soooo.....It's about ENFORCEMENT. They're just here to maintain "public safety." (I guess I don't need to pay for car registrations any longer--or buy car insurance.)

ALSO, it's nice that they're deciding which rights they won't take away.

FURTHER,,it's nice that this fellow can state that--on one hand, "the department would take the petition into consideration," WHILE on the other hand, "the department wouldn't change its policy."

seemingly it's the position of more then one department. law enforcement is taking the position that illegal immigration is a civil offense (it is) and thus they have no obligation to enforce. my position is not that they necessarily enforcing but informing. to not do so i believe is wrong there are many cities that are actively working and training with ICE to enforce in communities. there are so many things that go with illegals that law enforcement ignores and that is especially wrong. i was reading the article and it said that the kid and mom went back to mexico voluntarily and they held the father for formal deportation. now if he comes back illegally and is deported again (who knows this may already be his 2nd time) he can be barred from reentry for up to 20 years. the family has effectively been arm twisted into now following the law. good move. here is a different read on whether police should enforce illegal immigration. the following ARTICLE; Union says city may be forcing officers to defy federal immigration laws-The dispute centered on an immigrant-friendly order that outlines what officers should - and more directly, should not - do in relation to illegal immigrants. The regulation, first issued in 2006, tells officers they may not inquire about a person's immigration status unless they are investigating criminal activity, and forbids officers from serving administrative deportation warrants from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Dear Beach Girl: I am a Tucson resident. Been here for a few years. One of the first things I ever heard about the Tucson police dept. was from a city councilman. "Some of the most heinous crimes committed in our city our perpetrated by the police."
This is an unsafe city. It is unsafe to walk in, ride a bicycle in, be out at night in. It is a very dangerous place, and much of that danger comes from Tucson City Police.
Rapes, muggings robberies, fencing stolen property and of course the druginators. All these crimes have been attributed to Tucson police, (just in the last few years).
So to assign any type of logic to these yahoo's at all, would be in error. It is what it is, it's always political. To bad the FBI does not function for the good of the American public any longer, it was their job to make sure a local law enforcement agency never got this far away from their designated duties.

What a stupid statement to make for an elected official. I hope Americans still have enough guts to throw that guy out! It's a shame that sanctuary cities have the audacity to say no to enforce the law at the very least. Time to get out there and vote! Attrition through enforcement! Roberto Villasenor, nice American name, I'm sure he's totally impartial!

What they say is basically true. They have enough problems dealing with muggers, rapists and murderers to also do the job of ICE.What all those people should have done is marched to the congress representative and asked why he hasn't done anything to stop this one way or another. Or better yet march to the ICE offices and ask why they haven't done enough.how can people expect the police officers to take on the role or federal agents? especially considering how little pay they already receive.

I think this is complete crap!! I saw a bunch of students protesting for that kid and his family being deported. I agree that if they find someone here illegally NO MATTER where they find them they should contact immigration immediately!!! If people want to be in our country they need to do it the right way and they won't have to worry about being deported

I feel all police departments should at least covertly assist ICE when legally possible in their pursuit of illegal aliens. Nevertheless, you should have posted this article below from the 11/8 Star along with this morning's article.

I do hope that the police chief is a elective official, so that he can be recalled or voted out of office ASAP
