Im only 13, and it seems silly to start worrying about this now, but I may want to become an interpreter for the deaf if its a good job. I want to start taking courses after school in january. You can do that right?

If this is not a good job, what other job is?

The reason im worrying now is because my brother skipped highschool and went to college instead; so far everything is working out for the better. When I get out of school I want to be able to make a good pay.

I also plan on getting my other degrees as well but would like to start off as an interpreter because my sister is deaf, so if I cant become an interpreter everything would still work out good for me.

Awesome!

Since you are growing up with your sister you know there is a shortage of interpreters.

Pay changes based on what you are doing (and on call for a hospital is going to get paid differently than a teacher).

There are definitely course and you are way ahead of the game since you wont have to work at learning sign!

Also, I have included a link below for you to look at other possibilities.

You are *way* too young to really be considering how to get on a career path in my opinion, you still have many years of personal changes and growth so don't worry about that, just do good in school. If you're interested in taking classes dealing with sign language and interpreting, by all means do that, participate in whatever activities you have interest in.

That sounds like a good career path. Some ideas to get started in it (and have an early detection if you like the field) is to try to find volunteer jobs working with the deaf. Or volunteer and work around people (you learn good communication skills, how to handle situations, etc.)

If being an interpreter is something you would enjoy then by all means look into it. My advice, go for a career in something you absolutely love to do. That way you don't have to worry about being the best in your field, it will come naturally and work wont seem like work at all.

You can take courses for American Sign Language which would be the signing used by the deaf.

At 13 who knows what you will run into in the future that will change your career path. At least you have an idea of what you want to do. I know some 24 year olds with Bachelor's degrees that have no idea what they want to do.

Kid -- the world is your oyster. You can do anything you want to do, as far as anyone else is concerned. But it's your call. The ball's in your court. If you delegate that choice to someone else, it's still your responsibility.
