I read that mixing steel fittings onto copper causes corrosion .... is brass alright to use when connecting copper valves and pipes?

Yes. Brass and copper do not promote electrolosis. Steel to brass or copper does.

ITS OK- TRY USING SHARK BITE-IN STOCK AR HOME DEPOT-ONCE YOU USE IT YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO
USE SOLDER OR FITTINGS AGAIN
