To me, the word 'crusade' means an ill-advised military offensive that is liable to result in massive losses for both sides and which will ultimately prove to be utterly futile. ...a lot like the Vietnam war. ...a lot like Bush's idiotic war in Iraq.

Crusade: see diplomacy (antonym). A "crusade" is an all-out, take-no-prisoners campaign, based on unexamined ideology and ignoring the basic humanity of one's designated enemy. Essentially it is a war of extermination.
