…Nothing will end war unless the people themselves refuse to go to war. – Albert Einstein

He was referring of course to universal human consciousness---that is, both sides in a conflict.

His opinions did not suggest unilateral disarmament.

His statement makes perfect sense.

Free people do not obey bad orders from their leaders. We hanged a number of Germans after WWII based on this premise.

Einstein also said,
"The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."

This implies that men should not just sit on the sidelines while innocent people are being slaughtered - even if you are not directly being invaded.

All in all, the quote you allude to in your question will only be realistic if people from BOTH sides refuse to go to war, otherwise, the pacifist side is going to get its idealistic butt kicked.

Most wars are fought on false pretenses...especially the Afghan and Iraq wars.

Anyone who volunteers is an ignorant idiot.

Einstein is mostly right.
