Is it ok to talk to my boss about rumors I may be getting fired?

At the end of this week, Ive been hearing rumors that someone in our office may get fired at the end of a December (in a month and a half) yet no one has approached me about the topic or talked to me about it, making me think that I may be the one, Ive been there less than a year and Im wondering whether its me.

Is it rude to go approach my boss about this? Maybe I could start by talking to my job performance and then segway into the rumors? Or is asking the boss about rumors unprofessional?

I have not heard my name specifically mentioned, but like I said, I have not had conversation about this with any of my co-workers, which makes me uncomfortable. Any honest opinions would be great.

I would rather resign than be fired, because I do not deserve to be fired, the office is a very backstabbing atmosphere so nothing really suprises me.

I wouldn't. It may be that it is known that staff has to be cut at the end of the year. I would think that approaching your boss would make them look into reasons that you think it might be you. If you have a good track record with them, there shouldn't be reason for it to be you. Perhaps there is someone there who has been there longer, who doesn't do as good a job as you do--and perhaps they're paid more--who should they get rid of?

No I would not speak to my boss about this rumor, and yes it is very unprofessional. Sometimes a rumor is started to get people upset it has no substance to it.Rumors have cause a lot of pain and devastation. If you know that you have done your job to the best of your ability and have not had any complaints from your boss or supervisor then please try and relax I know that's easier to say than do.If for some reason business has slacked off and that is company policy then you won't get fired just laid off so there is nothing bad on your work record. With this being Nov.seem like professionals would have talked with or put something in your check saying that they regret it but because of whatever we will have to let you go,just to give you time to start looking for work else where. If these rumors are having a stressing affect and is interfering with your work then ask a co-worker who you talk to on a reg basic,it might make you feel better. You know there is always some kind of office gossip going around believe some of what you see and none of what you hear unless its coming from the persons mouth that it is being spoken about. I hope every goes well for you and good luck keep us posted on how it turns out I am very concern.

You should have an idea if it's really you or not; how has your job performance been so far? How many people have you heard actually say this? Are they reliable or just office gossips? You can go to your boss and discuss your job performance and then, as you say, segue into what you need to do to improve, but I would not ever mention being fired...At the last company I worked, rumors started about people going to be fired and the company going out of busienss and I went to a supervisor and asked him. He said all the rumors were untrue, but a few people could be let go; a few months after that, many did get fired but the company did not go out of business.

If rumors are going around and you've not been included, then its possible that you may be the one to go. Even if you ask your boss, he will most likely be uncomfortable talking about the subject and there's no guarantee that he'll tell you. Why not approach the one who is spreading the rumors and ask her upfront where she got her information. In any case, sounds like you really dont enjoy the working atmosphere so why not get a jump on things and start looking for another job.

Don't approach the boss because if your neck is on the cards, he won't tell you in advance, and referring to rumors will make you look like a gossip, when all you want is to know where you stand. The last one in is always the first out - if you were the last person hired, it'll be you. Look around for another job without telling anyone else, take a day off sick when you have an interview lined up, and think of yourself, because office jobs are so brittle. Good luck.

As much as you would like to know I seriously doubt your boss will be truthful about if it is you. Your boss cannot divulge that information, however, he may hint that it is you. I suggest you get your resume updated and start looking for a new job just in case. Keep in mind what you are hearing are rumours and there may be no truth to them. Given your office environment doesn't appear to be very nice (backstabbing, etc.) it may be a good idea to go somewhere else even if you don't get fired.

It's not unprofessional to ask your boss about your job security. I would refer to the rumours as the source of your need to have some clarity.

However, do it by making a proper appointment to talk, or she/he might brush you off.

It sounds like an awful place to work - emotionally unhealthy.
I'd consider changing jobs regardless of what your boss has to say.

You had to have your mom communicate on your supervisor? once you're sufficiently previous to have a activity, then you rather're sufficiently previous to handle it on your person. all and sundry is going to gossip, so suck it up and deal. As for the guy, in case you have have been given the police in touch, you may desire to enable them to handle it. Revenge won't help.
