You can have 8 people and eight controllers that hook up wirelessly via bluetooth for offline gaming. THe usb ports on the front have nothing to do with how many controllers can connect via wireless Bluetooth. So 40 gig , 60gig, 80gig doesn't matter. The usb ports are used for external harddrives, jumpdrives, printers , mouse, and keyboards, as well as recharging the controllers. On line some games have up 40 people at once.

The current maximum for offliine is 7 controllers connected to one PS3.
