Recently I've made a conscious effort to stop talking to myself. It's not that I'm ashamed of it, but I find my advice to myself is usually hopeless, and wrong, which leads to arguments. They say that talking to yourself is the first sign of madness, the second is answering back. As I am in the full blown argument stage, you will appreciate that I am more than a little concerned :D
Seriously, though, recently, I have caught myself telling myself off if something goes wrong.
When my son is not here, the hours stretch out when there's no-one to talk to, and like others, I think it's a subconscious thing that we all do - just some don't admit it!

I sort of talk myself thru tasks I have to do. Not advice so much as gentle instruction and encouragement. It helps me remember all the different parts of the task.
I was talking myself thru changing after gym the other day, making sure I got the towel out of my bag and put it where I could reach it after my shower; putting sweaty clothes in one bag, getting clean clothes out of another; "top back on the lotion, that's it"; etc. etc.
I'd almost finished when the door of the sauna opened and a dripping red man came out. He'd been in there all along. Gave me an odd look, I thought.

I usually run over important conversations I am going to have, as sort of a way to prepare myself. Sometimes I sort of say whatever I'm doing at the moment. Sometimes I "write" things (I'm a writer, and I can go over a sentence 40 times to get it just right) out loud.
Did you know that talking to oneself is a sign of intelligence? The more a person does it, supposidely the smarter they are.

I tell myself not to do things that would get me in trouble... you know, when your mom bakes a cake for guests and you're dying to have a bite but you can't because they haven't reached? I'd be like "don't do it, don't do it, don't do it... have a sense of self-preservation woman." (my mom would kill me if i'd mess the cake up) crap like that. And I talk to myself as I study... sort of explain what I just read to myself.
