how can i use the fdisk command in /dev/hda, when i put fdisk /dev/hda in tty2(terminal 2) it says unable to open, even when i am logged on as root.

fdisk works with partitions... eg fdisk /dev/hda1 or "fdisk /dev/hdb2" etc.. you specified the device type but not the device.

Is it really hda? Is it the first IDE/ATA drive plugged on to the first connection on the first controller?

I use SATA so my first drive is sda.

(this is before mounting and fdisk MAKES partitions, it doesn't work on them, unless I've lost it)
