The 60 gig playstation 3 has the best backwards compatiblity because it has PS2 hardware built into it.
The newer PS3s:
40 gig - Absolutely NO backwards compatibilty
80 gig "SOME" backward compatibilty. There are issues with this however, because the 80 gig PS3 plays PS2 games by "emulation."

The 80GB PS3 plays most PS2 games, but you must have an internet connection to download emulators
The 40GB PS3 plays no PS2 games.
