I expect the Bible stories such as Jacob/Esau and Isaac/Ishmael are partly parables to explain a tribal conflict which went back even further.

Ismael-Isaac conflict.

Muslims claim that Ismael was the first-born of Abraham. Jews claim that it was Isaac who was the legitimate heir promised by God to Abraham AND Sarah.

Amazingly, Ismael and Isaac did not actually live in conflict. Their descendants long after them did, and still continue for religious reasons.

The promised Messiah would come through the promised son of Abraham. Was He Jesus from Isaac or Muhammad from Ismael?

At least, this is my understanding on the matter.

Not really, you see Abraham disobeyed God and had a son whith is wifes maid servent. They named him Ishmel. Then God fulfilled his promise and gave Sarah a son named Jacob. God promised Abraham that him and Sarahs first born would be the line not Abraham and the servent. Muslims think that since Ishmel was the first born he was the line not Jacob.
