I agree with the others that #6 shot is best for Squirrels out of a 12 gauge. It has plenty of shot and won't damage a lot of meat. I also agree that anything smaller would be a pain due to the many additional small pellets you would have to pick out, and #4 is too large and overkill out of a 12 gauge too..

Well, there are tradeoffs. Both are good for squirrels. With #6 you get more pellets in a shell but that means more pellets in the meat that you have to pick out. My preference is #4 since it is easier to get all of the shot out of the meat. one little pellet left in the meat can mean a trip to the dentist. Actually my preference for squirrel hunting is my .32 cal. muzzleloader or a .22 rifle. The single bullet always goes all the way through and there is no shot to clean out.

A 22 is best specially if you like eating squirrel. Shot, bb's make it hard to enjoy eating

you will elect #6 for squirrel. in case you do no longer elect to apply slugs for the hogs and don't have an aversion to hogs chewing on you, you may desire to need that a hog could fee you and you may desire to stick the barrel down its throat and then pull the set off. conserving the barrel a pair of inches from its head could additionally artwork. are you able to take a large knife? that would desire to artwork greater valuable for the hogs. some states have strange regulations for searching in WMAs and you may could wait till deer season till you could now hunt hogs with an appropriate firearm.

6 is probaly best, but frankly when the foliage is still thick as when it is now I prefer 5 shot.

4 should be reserved for foxes, turkeys, etc. Too big for tree rats.

#6 lead shot is the all around most deadly shotgun cartridge there has ever been. Not only for squirrel, but it's awesome for game birds for long shots.
Also I have killed deer on deer drives with #6 lead when I shot them in the head or face.

I personally use 5. It isn't that hard to find, and it's a few less bbs to have to deal with. Happy Hunting!

#6 is good, # 4 is overkill, anything smaller is a pain to pick out. Have you thought about a .22 or .17hmr?
