We have a puppy, about 8 mos and 80 lbs. He is very smart and very out going and we spend a lot of time with him. He has been to obeidence classes and is pretty good with most things, except chewing. Inside he is fine, and outside a lot of times he is fine too, but...this month he has chewed up the following: 1 ethernet cable outside, 1 "Cable" cable outside right up to the box, the BURIED sprinkler wires he has dug up and chewed thru in 1 spot, ATE a bycycle helmet from the garage, the back door mat, the insulation around the air conditioner cold air return, and he has begun to dig...DEEP not just for usual fun. He is on a wireless fence so we have basically taken him OFF of a long line and moved him to that. He is confined to the back and side yards as we found he dug a lot in the front planters. This behavior has been happening a lot more in just the past month. He has LOTS to chew on outside that are NOT cables and OTHER things. And inside he is NOT bad. HELP?

Thank you all for your responses I think the queen is on track. As an addendum, we tried the chili powder thing and bitter apple on the window panes...we will be replacing them soon, he he he likes the taste. In fact I put a WHOLE container of cayenne in a hole and he siffled a few times but kept on digging. RR are notorious for being food fanatics..so this seems to be the point with him. But attention may be ther key here. It seems after her posting I took a look at WHEN he is doing it...if I am home alone during the day and I put him outside he is all good..BUT if it is in the evening or weekends and my son and or husband is home with me and he is NOT inside, it is when he makes destructive behavior a point. Is this normal just wanting to be part of the family?

lol... good luck... i had a rhodesian ridge x bull mastiff, and she never stopped chewing! she ate garden hoses, bags of concrete, shoes, balls, underwear, towels, sheets, her kennel... anything

but when she ripped up the partner's mum's prize rose bush we had to take drastic action...

We made a mix of vaseline and chilli powder and smeared it over the trunk of the replanted bush, she never touched it again. quite a few things we managed to smear with our chilli concoction, and it worked for a while - but obviously you can't smear everything, and eventually she got a taste for chilli!

the only other thing is just keeping them really entertained! buy a large Kong toy, but some dry dog biscuits in it and smear peanut butter over the opening. will keep him entertained and chewing on that.

oh and as for the digging, we tried putting her poo in the holes, didn't work... we tried putting water balloons in the holes - this helped, she sure got a shock, but she went back there. in the end, to save the lawn, we dug up the entire lawn and laid down chicken wire, then replaced the lawn. so she coudln't dig deep.

we had a bit of a problem dog i think! she failed obedience classes, lol... ball of energy!

unfortauntely she stayed with the ex, so no idea if the problems sorted themselves out - i was with pup from 8 weeks to 2 years or so. one massive ball of muscle and energy.

i hope your dog hasn't discovered the joys of bounding through flyscreen doors yet...

I would guess inside the house he is with you or your family and if he does something he is immediately reprimanded. So he he knows what he can and can not do. It sound like when he is outside he is more or less on his own. He's an adolescent looking for something fun to do and since no one is there to play with he is making his own fun and has decided that plastic is pretty good.fun.

You need to confine him where he will not get into trouble or someone stay with him so that he is being supervised.
