Welding itself is not a demanding job requiring a lot of heavy, heavy lifting (you have other people help you with that being offshore). You will have to be limber as you will weld on your back, bent over, on ladders, etc...

To get on offshore, get as much experience as you can, or hire out to a contractor.

Good welders on the gulf coast are hard to come by and make $$$.

You should not have any problem getting a job after getting out of a community college.

If you do not want to have to work offshore, contact a pipeline company or a natural gas utility as they have need of experienced welders too.

Go to the local community college. It usually takes about two years. Learn all you can. Then you have to get some real world experience. Welding is not too terribly demanding physically, although it is hot and does have its moments like anything else. You can get into the oil industry just from making contacts with other people connected. The pay is often very good if you are good at what you do, you just have to be careful. The oilfield is full of heavy iron and powerful machines, most of which are hydraulic. Just be careful. Good luck.

Vocational school training helps... you also need to find your nearest Union Hall.
