I came into the Air Force planning on spending only 4 years while I earned money for college. It turned out that I liked it well enough to go for a career; I retired after 20 years.

Too often people think that they will only do one job for 20 their entire time in any branch of the military. When you first join, you will only do jobs that your knowledge and experience allow you to do. After you prove your abilities, you will get new opportunities for career advancement.

The Air Force, being by far the youngest branch of the military, tends to not be tied down to old traditions. The traditions are still being created. If you work hard, study hard, there are no limitations on how far you can rise, or what you can do based on your qualifications (mental & physical).

The jobs I did during my career in the Air Force have allowed me to get a civilian job with the Department of Defense at a higher pay grade than ever thought possible. I owe what I have now to my Air Force experiences. Good Luck to you!

WOW!! I don't think i can fit it all on here. I tried 2 years of college after high school, but that didn't work out as planned!! Worked in my home town at factories and stuff, but couldn't see any future in that either. I joined at 21, and after 17 years of service, I can say it has changed my life SO much. I have seen the world. I have learned skills in 3 different career fields that are in high demand in the "real" world. I have taken college courses for free. I have had 2 sons that are the best thing in my life. I've been taken care of medically, including 2 major surgeries. But most of all I grew up, became a man, and have had a blast doing it!!

It's helped pay for two houses and two new cars. It's given me two Associates Degrees and allowed me to work toward a Bachelors. Plus taken me all over the world.

The U.S. Air Force gave me a GREAT step-dad! That's how my mom met him. He was on 'liberty' and came often to the place my mom worked. The rest is history.

* Taught me responsibility, honor and dedication
* Made my family proud of me
* Sent me to beautiful Monterey, CA to learn a second language (at their expense) and then sent me back for an advanced course
* Enabled me to be a young but completely self-sufficient woman who is about to purchase a house and drives a Lexus (the pay obviously isn't *that* bad)
* Paid for my background investigation for a TS/SCI security clearance (pretty expensive from what i understand)
* Paying for college
* Gave me 2 interest-free loans (one to repair a previous vehicle and another to attend my grandmother's funeral)
* Provided me with opportunities to easily invest in TSP, IRA, etc. as well as a retirement pension when I get out
* Taught me skills which will enable me to get a *very* well paying job with agencies such as NSA
* Provides 9+ years of full health care, including PRK corrective eye surgery at no cost to me
* Saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars (BX and commissary shopping, low interest rate loans through the credit unions)
* Sent me to Iraq for a year (ok, they can't all be positive haha)

Nothing.

Army did great things for me, but I did even more for my country. And am willing to do it again.
