In the three answers given so far figures such as 2 million, 1.4million and 3-4million have been forwarded. If this is so why with 154000 troops in iraq are the US military overstretched? The US has also said that they no longer have the ability to fight 2 wars at once!

Well, that's a hard question to answer. Considering that they have people join the military all the time. But if I had to guess I would probably have to say about 3-4 million.
