I guess I need to ask what does "effective" mean ? I've got a browning buckmark auto in .22, in has a 5.75" barrel. At the range I can hit 25 yards consistently and I'm questionable at 50 yards. I can hit a 6" circle at 100 yards after the first couple of shots and I adjust for elevation and windage. I've never shot at a target longer than 100 yards.

I would think the bullet itself would be effective at 500 yards or so and still carrying knowdown power ( or at least as much knowdown as a .22 possesses), but the issue would be control and effectively delivering that round.

I have seen the disclaimer on the box that hey are dangerous up to 1 mile.

Effective range for a 4" or 6" .22LR caliber Semi-automatic Target Pistol is going to be 35-50 yards MAX. Anything past those ranges will be fairly inconsistant groupings and due to bullet drop will begin to fall off and accuracy will suffer. This is especially true if you use standard velocity match-grade 22 ammunition........

The effective range would be 25-50 yds., but you would experience more drop from the 4" at 50 yds. for obvious reasons. This is what adjustable sights are for and they are a must when you get to 50 yd. ranges.

The velocity loss with the shorter barrel is insignificant, but the sight plane on the longer will make it somewhat easier for you to hit what you aim at, and hitting what you aim at is the major factor in effective range, but it's going to be pretty short in any case.

.22 pistols are good to about 50 yards. Rifles are a better choice for shots out to 100 yards.

Deer searching with a .22 is unlawful in maximum if no longer all states.
