Well. some of this depends on your oven, the thickness (both consistency and literal thickness) of the mix in the pan, and even the material of the pan (for example, nonstick pans lengthen cooking time slightly). The only real way to know how well this time applies to your particular set-up is to try it and then, if things don't turn out the way you'd like, change the time or even the temperature the next time you have a go at this.

For all sorts of brownies that I have made, the real test is twofold. First, there's always the toothpick test. Stick a toothpick into the center of the brownies, then pull it out. The more material that clings to it, the less 'done' the brownies are. The other is something I've observed, which is that as brownies (at least the brownies I've made) near 'doneness' the surface tends to crack and fissure. That's because the surface finishes cooking before the inner material, which expands a bit and breaks up the crust that's formed on top.

One trick I use to avoid burning brownies is to turn the oven off for the last 20% or so of the cooking time WITHOUT opening the oven door. The oven should remain at the correct temperature, but there's less chance of 'fresh' heat (this is especially true of electric ovens) incinerating the bottom of the brownies before the inner portion has cooked.

Good luck.

If it says to on the brownie mix box, you probably should. Follow the directions!

it could be about right, depends on temperature of the oven
I would follow directions - that's always your best bet and c'mon you have the rest of the weekend - what's your hurry? stick them in the oven then do some yahoo answers and in no time they'll be done :)
