Play games, do crafts, watch a movie. It really isn't a LONG time if you keep the child busy and entertained. Whatever you do, don't ignore him/her and expect them to "play on their own". They have short attention spans and get bored easily. And nothing is worse than a bored 5 year old, because they will find something to do themselves and most of the time it won't be good... :)

QUICK Get off the computer! :o).....good thinking to ask. I hope you're really busy interacting with the 5 year old right now and don't have time to read my response.
Just know that next time, bring a bag of baby sitter tricks. He're some ideas for preschool age children.
Bubbles
Books- but mainly picture books with very little text on each page. find books with colorful and engaging pictures. Ask your children's librarian to help you. Jan Brett, Don and Audry Wood, Eric Carle, Felicia Bond, Steven Kelloge, all good authors to look for a beginning.
Building toys- something cool that is unusual- Lincoln logs
playdoh, always big hit- sheetcake pans work well with keeping the mess to a minimum. The sides on the pan keep the mess where you want it.
Never underestimate the value of outdoor time.
TV and Computer are usually something kids get plenty of time doing. Do the unexpected
P.S.----if he/she's an active bouncy kid, then they aren't going to be satisfied with quiet activity. Good luck, I'm anxious to know how your day goes. ;o)

Aviod the TV. The parents will be more impressed if you don't plop him down in front of the teletubbies.
Clean up. Are there dishes in the sink when you are done? Clean them. The parents will be wowed.
Have the little kid be creative. Bring along some paper and a new box of crayons, and let him/her draw. Don't make your own assumptions about what they are drawing, ask them and listen.
Learn about allergies or anything else you should know. Feel free to ask the parents. If you are preparing meals while you are there, make it healthy and yummy. For dessert, have apples dipped in cinnamon sugar.
Read to them. Bring them a book with pictures, or see if they have some of their own. Reading to them is a good way to quiet the little monsters.
Music. Play some kid-friendly music, like the Nutcracker, or Jack johnson's Curious George CD. Dance with the kid and have fun. It's a good way to get them off the floor.
Put them to sleep on time. don't play any high-energy games before bed time, read them one story and say good night (don't forget to help them brush their teeth and pick out their pajammies) Once they are in bed, turn down the lights and noise in the house. Be sure to clean up.
SMILES!! ; )

whatever you do, dont play hide-and-seek, those little buggers think of the most clever hiding spots, you might never find them. try and think of fun games that will keep them active, no 5 year old likes arts and crafts as much as they would like to play tag or something fun outside. i've been babysitting for 6 years, trust me. and you'll be able to relax becuase after about 3 hours, the little one will be ready for a nap. good luck!

try and remember what it was like for you at 5 years old! just keep the kid busy and happy...5 year olds love to be helpers also, so if you have anything you need to do, allow the kid to help...it will make him/her feel more like a "big kid"! it's more like a guessing game that lasts all day long! when something doesn't work, try something else until they get bored with that, then move on!!! have fun :)

Ask the kid what they wanna do - watch a video , ask if they have any games they want to play with you? If it's okay with the kids parents, take it to a near by park?
If they go to bed, watch TV or go on their PC , text your mates etc.
Hope this helps, coz im a 14 year old too :) lol x
