For what Mormons think of black people.

We aren't racists, we never had slaves and for the last 30 years all men can have the priesthood. Although I would disagree with the past Authorities on the black question, we have repented.

Did you know Gladys Knight is a prominent black Mormon?

As for the Cain question? There was a footnote in the Church History (7 volumes) by a early LDS leader who said while sailing on the Missouri river that he saw Cain chasing him and it wasn't a black human but a bigfoot like creature.

We believe that all people, no matter what color their skin is, are children of God. They have just as much right to believe and practice our faith as any one does.

People will always use the early history of the church to show we are racist. The problem with that is that they don't look at their own churches. During the time period when blacks weren't allowed to hold the priesthood is also the time in history when blacks were being segregated from everything in this country. Most churches wouldn't even allow black people to worship with them. They had to go to church at a separate time, couldn't share the same bathroom, or drinking fountain. They couldn't even go to the same schools!! There were many preachers that were against civil rights, and against the black people ever getting the same rights as whites.

Our church, on the other hand, not only was involved with the abolition of slaves (the early church leaders were very adamant about the fact that blacks were children of God just like everyone else, and should be treated the same), but we allowed any black person who wanted to- free or slave- to come worship with us, along with everyone else in the congregation. There was never segregation in the church.

The reasons for the ban on blacks having the priesthood was one that God knows. We know it had to do with the curse put on Cain. I personally don't know the specifics. It doesn't matter to me. That was a time before I even realized what was going on in my own world. I was only 4-5 at the time, so it made no difference to me. I can say that God can change things when He feels the time is right. The leaders of the church prayed long and hard about this. The asked God to lift that restriction, and it took a while before that was done.

It wasn't to appease the government, or make things easier for the church. It happened because God wanted it to.

I've very glad that they are allowed the full and complete gospel, and are allowed the same privileges I am now. My ex sister in law is from Jamaica. She is dark as just about anyone I have ever seen. She was able to be married to my brother in law in the temple. They were divorced not because of race, but because she's nuts!! I don't not like her because of her skin color. I don't like her because of the person she is.

God loves everyone, and we as a church believe that everyone should have the same rights and privileges as anyone else. Does that sound racist to you?

Same as on any other color people.

edit: Nikki, where to begin!!

We don't learn about spirit BABIES. One thing I've always wondered on this spirit BABIES thing; why do SPIRIT babies need nappies? I would think spirit poop is not hard to clean up at all! :-p

It's Ed Decker taking what we believe, or at least, what we theorize, and turning it into what one ecumenical group called "religious pornography". We do NOT DO NOT teach that God had sexual relations with Mary.

We believe that we are all spirit CHILDREN of our Heavenly Father, but how these spirit children came to be, we don't know. We do NOT teach that it had anything to do with endless celestial sex, or that women are endlessly celestial pregnant, and give birth to spirit BABIES.

We do believe that Lucifer tried to present a plan of salvation, but IMHO, I don't believe that he was ever in the running to BE the saviour.

Does this help?

We love me and my fellow Black individuals. I hold the Priesthood and I hold positions of "power." I am sealed in the temple to my Black Sweetheart.

I can do anything anyone else in the church can. All Black people should look into the LDS Church and pray about it. The LDS church is the LEAST bigoted church I know.

To the Mormon church there is no difference at all between white people, black people, asian people, etc.

Any black man can hold any office in the church.

Otherwise, Nikki. If you want me to explain it to you, I'll be happy to. It contains elements of truth, mixed with lies and speculation and a sort of scary background music to tear us Mormons down.

Beliefs on black people? They were descended from Cain, whose mark was to have children with dark skin. They are as good as anyone else, and as of about 1978, they have every right and privilege in common with any other Mormon provided that they fulfill behavioral requirements.

Most churches have a past history of discrimination (Catholics discriminated against Jews and Muslims in the middle ages, southern Protestants discriminated against African Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries, some Muslims have discriminated against "infidels" in recent years, etc). Unfortunately, in the past (before I was born), Mormons taught some of the same things about blacks that Southern Protestants taught (Curse of Cain/Ham, etc) and so did not allow blacks to hold leadership positions in the church. Unlike Southern Protestants, however, Mormons never segragated their congregations and always taught that blacks could go to heaven.

However, all that changed decades ago. Modern Mormonism is very much opposed to discrimination of any kind. Ironically, many who discriminate against us (professional anti-Mormons) hypocritically accuse us of being discriminators!

The Mormon Church is not a racist church. I'm Mormon, and my wife is black. We were married in a Mormon temple, where the officiator told us that God approved of our marriage. My wife is treated well at church, as are the other African American members of our congregation. I've had a black bishop in several different Mormon congregations of which I've been a member.

Many anti-Mormons, however, intentionally misrepresent Mormon teachings in an attempt to discredit Mormonism. I've written about this type of discrimination on my site at http://www.allaboutmormons.com/brief_critique_anti-mormon_propaganda.php . Pay careful attention to the video at http://www.allaboutmormons.com/ENG_Video62.php .
