Nobody knows what causes cancer, though many people, usually those who have never had or studied cancer, have a pet theory.

You can eat a healthy diet, exercise, not smoke... all that good stuff, and still get cancer.

Some cancers have known risk factors; smoking is linked to lung cancer, and sun exposure to skin cancer. The number one risk for many cancers is getting older.

A healthy diet is always a good idea, and you'll feel better if you eat properly, but don't rely on it to prevent cancer - cancer doesn't discriminate.

Although there is no guaranteed way to prevent cancer, people can reduce their risk (chance) of developing cancer by:

* not using tobacco products
* choosing foods with less fat and eating more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains
* exercising regularly and maintaining a lean weight
* avoiding the harmful rays of the sun, using sunscreen, and wearing clothing that protects the skin
* talking with a doctor about the possible benefits of drugs proven to reduce the risk of certain cancers

Although many risk factors can be avoided, some, such as inherited conditions, are unavoidable. Still, it is helpful to be aware of them. It is also important to keep in mind that not everyone with a particular risk factor for cancer actually gets the disease; in fact, most do not. People who have an increased likelihood of developing cancer can help protect themselves by avoiding risk factors whenever possible and by getting regular checkups so that, if cancer develops, it is likely to be found and treated early. Treatment is often more effective when cancer is detected early. Screening exams, such as sigmoidoscopy or the fecal occult blood test, mammography, and the Pap test, can detect precancerous conditions (which can be treated before they turn into cancer) and early-stage cancer. -

Speaking from personal experience, if you :
- avoid addictions and have balanced diet
- have a lifestyle where moderate physical exercise fills you with energy (not sedentary)
- do not experience fatigue that is of not of your own doing
- do not have symptoms of premature aging

You are good to go!!

BTW, it is a good idea to get a sense of how healthy your body can get. For that you can join an activity that exercises full-body (but does not cost a lot :-). I joined the Army National Guard.

That is about it, because if you listen to the mediaeverything causes cancer. Just do the best you can and not worry about it.

Quote from Otto Warburg at http://www.cancertutor.com/ - "But nobody today can say that one does not know what cancer and its prime cause be. On the contrary, there is no disease whose prime cause is better known, so that today ignorance is no longer an excuse that one cannot do more about prevention. That prevention of cancer will come there is no doubt, for man wishes to survive. But how long prevention will be avoided depends on how long the prophets of agnosticism will succeed in inhibiting the application of scientific knowledge in the cancer field. In the meantime, millions of men must die of cancer unnecessarily."

Linus Pauling said "Everyone should know that the 'war on cancer' is largely a fraud."

Yes, we know what causes cancer. You can see a drastic reduction in cancer rates from those not on a western diet. Synthetic hormones in hand creams, shampoos and especially chicken (to get their breast to grow faster/bigger) are not good. Reducing the chance of getting cancer is about reducing risk - smoking, diet, poison/chemical/radioactive exposure and many other largely self-imposed behaviors cause cancer. We would not have near the cancer occurrances if we removed those high-risk behavors. Simple cause and effect, for the most part.

I also talked to my wife last night and she says that the female reproductive cancers could be hormone related. She says that to her current understanding that cervical cancer is caused by a virus. She says in the summer your calcium delivery goes down because your essential fatty acids drop due to sun, activity and maybe other reasons. At that time, cervical cancer risk goes up as the virus can spread easier. She says it's much like a cold sore that tends to pop up when your lysine (sp?) levels go down. That's why a lot of the lip treatments now contain lysine, but my wife says it doesn't help because it's 1) probably synthetic and 2) doesn't contain a synergist (it's in isolation). The other female reproductive cancers like ovarian and breast may be caused by hormone issues. If you're using a progesterone cream my wife says it gets stored in your fat deposits and will leach out over time and raise your progesterone levels. The problem is that hormone tests won't detect the synthetic, and your symptoms will likely show your progesterone as low. The other problem is that most in the medical field will prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) without testing. And there are many hand creams and shampoos out there with synthetic hormones in them and can exacerbate problems.

The bottom line is that optimum health is not easy, and a lot of the stuff we're either ingesting or using can wreak havoc on our lives. We just have to be careful and look for the CAUSE of these problems and not just look to most in the medical community to address the SYMPTOMS. In the natural health/alternative field, the goal is to address the cause of your illness/disease and actually help you get well, not be dependent on drugs and managed care!!!
