Do only humans understand humor? What purpose in life does humor serve?

Humor, as we understand it, is limited to humans, but it does seem to me that some of the more intelligent animals also have some kind of basic ability to respond to humor on some level. Certainly animals have been known to demonstrate happiness and sadness, so why not humor?
At its most basic level, humor is a stress reliever. Humorless people tend to be more stressed out and uptight, which may shorten their lifespan.

humor can make you healthy, humor lifts your spirits. Even when the worst thing in the world has happened to you, a well said joke helps to ease the pain. Humor can also hide pain. Humor can make you forget for a time that you ever had any worries. These reasons and I am sure more are why people love good comedies and a good joke.

Humor serves a lot of purposes, for example it relieves stress, creates positive emotional bonds between people, and many other positive effects. As a matter of fact I don't know of any negative effects of (positive) humor.

Laughter does good like a medicine. Sometimes if you are able just to use a little humor, you can diffuse a difficult situation or you can make yourself realize that you might be taking a situation too seriously.
Humor keeps you young, I think.

Depression has no sence of humor , it sees things as only as facts, even if random events come together, depression trys to make some sort of sense of it .. humor alows the gatherd events to be rearanged so that they display a gift rather then a theft ,, and although this explination doesn't make good sence ,it's designed to combat depression , and so does humor, with this thought in mind ,,, Homer lights a match ,which lights up the darkness ,revealing a skelliton causing him to scream AHHH! blowing out the match . He then reaches into his pocket retreaves another match ,strikes it lighting up the darkness again , with even more light then before ,as if thats possable , causing the skelliton to be revealed again , and of course causing him to scream AHHH ! which again causes the match to be blown out again, he then reaches into his pocket , and says " OH , thank god , no more matches , Ohh ! noo ! theres another one,!"
Oh ,,right,, humor, not homer ....
