Eat pasta the night before. Then about 2 hours before, so at 6 am, eat dry toast or plain pancakes. These things provide a lot of carbs to give your muscles sustainable energy to last throughout the race.
I also take a GU energy gel about 15-30 minutes before the race with a little water. Works great for hydration. You can find it at running stores or at http://www.gusports.com/html/gu_energy_gel.htm

Don't "try eating then resting for an hour and then running"

What I did was eat pancakes about midnight, then maybe a banana early next morning 2 hours before.

Don't worry, your performance is based more on the rest you received the night before the night before the marathon.

Good Luck

That's a good question. Some people eat light 2-3 hrs before. Some not at all. I can eat and start running. Test yourself to see what works. I ate 2 eggMcMuffins just before a 6 hour run. Best run I ever had. Came in 2nd with 41 1/2 miles out of 53 runners.

Eat pancakes for dinner the day before, and have some fruit and water about 6:30.
