I hv a electric hob and it seems it consumes more electricity and my electric bill shoots up. thinking of buying a microwave if it is going to consume less electricity and better cooking

The microwave will use less electricity overall, as it is not on for the same length of time. It generally cooks four or five times quicker than a hob, and consumes about one third less power while it is on.

Having said that, if it has a built-in digital clock, it does use a small amount of electricity on standby.

A microwave can be from 500 to 1000 watts or more, BUT, it cooks in a relatively short time, saving electricity. One bad feature of a microwave, it will remove moisture from items like potatoes, and will not 'brown' any meats, etc. There are models that do both, but use more electricity. I like my 1 minute cup of hot soup, 2 or 3 minute TV dinner, and 1 minute cup of coffee however!!

No. A simple motor-only device will not draw power until switched to the on position. To verify, I attached a special watt gauge to the fan. A normal fan, without any other device, drew no power. However, if you have a fan with an LCD or, if especially lazy, a remote control (yes they do exist) then you will have a "vampire-load" of about 2-5 watts. If it makes you feel better, plug it into a power strip and shut the strip of when not in use. Try to plug other "vampires" into the outlet and shut the whole thing off at night, or when at work, etc..

Depends on the wattage of the microwave.

microwaves are dangerous...they actually contain radioactivity. they can cause sizzures and other illnesses. Have your hob checked...perhaps it is time for a new one...they are making appliences that take less fuel every day.
