We adopted a stray cat and kitten that wandered into our yard. After the kitten was weaned we had the mother spayed. We didn't have any problems.

A few months later we had the kitten spayed. Now the mother cat hisses at the kitten and won't have anything to do with it. Why do you think this is happening? What should we do?

Neither of them are 'female' anymore.
Spaying them has made them 'freaks of nature' and they have to adjust to the change.
The older cat is trying to establish her role as the 'top cat'.
With the loss of the fermions the natural scent is gone.

Your kitten is probably still suckling on the mother or wanting to much attention. Unfortunately, when kittens turn a certain age the mother kitten will sort of neglect the adolescent kitten, fixed or not. She is doing this because she is trying to make the kitten more efficient especially if your kitten is a male, but she does it to the females too. Soon they will appear to fight with the mother's instinct to train the female kitten to hunt. When the kitten reaches about two years in age this should completely subside.

Once kittens are weaned, mama is done with them. If they don't get along later, mama really could care less. I'll be there are a lot of other mothers who wish they could pull this off. . .

Vet smell on the kitten. Give it a few days to wear off. They'll be ok then.
