I got an email warning about a new movie for children for which the marketing has already started.
It looks a lot like "Narnia" but is so far from it. BEWARE!
It will be out in December called THE GOLDEN COMPASS by Pullman.Nicole Kidman stars in the movie so it will probably be advertised a lot. This is just a friendly warning that you sure won't hear on TV. he claims to be able to "enlighten us Christians" by his own version that Adam and Eve's fall from Grace was a form of liberation, not misery, it was a good thing which gave human beings freedom. He says he will "pray for us" if we get confused by his idea that Wisdom (which the Bible teaches us) is really Satan. ( I interpret his views by saying that he offers to "pray" for us to make us believe he's Christian, but its really a ploy to silence us into confused wonderings if we'd missed anything from the Bible). In Proverbs Wisdom warns us of evil, which does not back up his deliberate misinterpretation of our Holy Book.

Look at his site if you think this email is made up or for spam, I, did a search and his website came up which can be viewed by clicking here http://www.randomhouse.com/features/pullman/author/qa.html#q6) I'll certainly boycott his books, which he names His Dark Materials and encourage other Christians to do the same.

I've received several different emails regarding this film and would never consider exposing children to it. Anything like this, that is written by a non-believer, expressly to make stabs at the Christian faith, is not worth spending hard earned $$ on.

Great question and thanks for sharing!

God bless!

There are more Atheists on Yahoo Answers making a bigger deal about the Golden compass then there are the small small percentages of Christians protesting it. Grow up! Edit: It's not about malice, I said grow up as I would to anyone who keeps up all the talk about a stupid movie (no matter what they said). It's like the damn teddy bear thing. Enough already.

I have read all 3 books and have to say the first book, which was originally called The Northern Lights, was actually quite enjoyable. however the second wasn't as good, although still enjoyable. I think the third book The Amber Spyglass was really over written and he puts far too many of his own religious views in it. I felt he left the reader with no scope for his own thoughts. It felt to me that he wanted to rant and rave about his own ideas on religion and used this book to do it. I think if you ignore the religious babble the first 2 books are worth checking out, but only read the last one if you have no opinions of your own.

the book has been out for some time, i have got it second hand recently, and intent to start reading it soon.

do not be afraid of any book, or what it has to say

after all the bible has many versions,
including one with several misprints which stated Thou shall commit adultery. You can imagine the fury that caused.
The book is a novel, one of a series....... read it, so it may attempt to challenge your beliefs or world views.
If someones faith cannot survive the words in a book, then is their Holy book any better just for being older.

I hope the film makers do the Golden Compass justice, after all there have been some real turkeys of films made based on other books, including the bible

I would encourage everyone to pick up a book, any book and read...too many go through life with poor reading skills or being unable to read at all. this skill should be developed.

Oh yea you say the author prays "for us", i should point out, its not just christians that pray, there are other beliefs he could be any of them

be true to your self, if you don't want to see the film or read the book, then DON'T. But don't stress about it

His Dark Materials is one of the greatest books of all time, only a religious fruitcake blind to reason and science could take such a strong dislike to such a landmark piece of literature.

Non creationist christians (i.e the slightly more reasonable of the bunch,) claim that genesis is an alegory and not to be taken as literal, however as the apple is interpreted as signifying knowledge, the essential moral seems to be, live in ignorance or we will punish you. This original sin was the turning point of mankind where we chose not to live in some false paradise but to seek knowledge and further ourselves.

Personally i cant wait for the film, it lks a good adaptation of te good book and hopefully will encourage children to read the books and start to question the world around us, who knows, the next great scientist could be born!

Why are Christians so afraid to even be partially exposed to different ideas?

Why would it be so terrible for your kids to see a film that might have some atheistic themes?

Are you that afraid that your kids will be warped if they even begin to think for themselves?

Is your faith so tenuous that a single movie or book will shatter it irreparably?

Narnia has some pretty overt Christian themes, and yet I, an atheist, was perfectly able to enjoy it. Thousands of atheists went to see the movie, and never once ever thought of boycotting the film.

Why can't Christians accept that there may be other viewpoints in the universe, and maybe take a look at what they are? Why boycott something just because you don't agree with it?

Such activities just make you look like the close-minded, reactionary, un-thinking sheep that atheists are always stereotyping you as. Why play into that stereotype? Why make it true?

The Philip Pullman Dark Materials trilogy are amazing books. I don't understand why Christians would be against them. What's wrong with books and films that challenge ideas? Do you want children that just blindly believe in God because it's all they've ever been told? This is as bad as those Christians who are opposed to Harry Potter because it's about witchcraft.

I was listening to "Quinn and Rose" (XM 165 6am to 9am EST) yesterday. Rose had researched into this. She quoted Pullman as saying in 2003 that he "hated the Chronicles of Narnia". The point being that he has an obsession against Christianity.

Yes I have. I have read the book too.

I do not like judging anything unless I know what it is.

The book is really good, untill it get's to the part about killing the person in charge, (god) because they want eternal freedom...>.
Everything you have stated above is correct.
