How do you comfort a crying man or woman? How did someone comfort you in your time of despair? Was it helpful?

Not really, if someone is in pain (emotionally) they are in pain. So if you think that there reason for for crying is futile, are you going to tell them to "be quiet"?

Be by their side, and keep silent. They will talk when they feel like it and what they need is some **to listen**.... After they speak their heart out, then you'll have the opportunity to comfort them.

Hard to say, depends on what they are crying about.
Sometimes it just helps to sit with them, or cry with them if you are also sad.
My baby girl died last year of pneumonia and many people came to comfort me. I don't remember anybody saying "the right thing" and suddenly feeling better. What helped was simply having people around me that shared my grief. I also appreciated people understanding that I need time alone periodically.
Also, everyone said they were praying for me. That was a great comfort because there is power in prayer.

You say what are you upset about? I haven't been in despair since i was about 11 yrs old. In either case they need therapy.

When a man is upset you give him something to do. Occupy his time, make him think he's getting something accomplished and he'll forget about his troubles. When a woman is upset there is nothing you can do.
