VLC's ok but it's not that pretty for playing DVDs. If you're anything like me, you want to use the tools you get with the Operating System. MPEG-2 codecs (required to play back a DVD) are included if you buy DVD playing software, so it's common for people to have a problem playing DVDs if they haven't purchased anything (Windows does not include them). But if you're getting sound only, it is more likely to be something with your graphics. Try experimenting with different Video Acceleration settings in windows media player (settings, advanced/troubleshoot/DVD depending on the version you're using). Finally, make sure that the graphics card drivers you're using are completely up to date from the manufacturer - not windows update.

Although I agree with TallPaul that VLC will play just about anything, if you really want to stick with Windows Media Player what you need to do is download a codec pack. (I use K-Lite codec pack, and it does a very good job.)

Download one from the second url. There are several packs that you can choose from ... and they're free. (Scroll down the list on the left hand side of the page until you come across CODEC PACKS.)

Try the free latest Winamp5.5 Media Player. It has improved a lot and is very, very cool!

Get it from www.winamp.com

Lack of codecs.

Download and install VLC. It plays *everything*.
