Don't feel bad, we are all constrained by the difficulties we face trying to put thoughts into words.
Sometimes they just don't translate well.

I don't think it's my lack of communication skills that disturbs me. It's the realization that the person I'm talking to or writing to has an entirely different background than me, and may easily misinterpret what I say. I may say something from one standpoint, but the other person looks at it with a different set of expectations. My answers are usually long on this forum as I try to explain carefully what I mean, but in the end they may not be read. Oh well ...

I agree with that. But I would like to go one step further. More often than not, it's a matter of semantics. What I mean by what I say is NOT what the other person understand me to say.
Which, of course, leads to the concept of hermeneutics (you DID ask this question in R & S): what did ancient writings /authors (e.g. the Bible) mean to their contemporaries? Is that meaning the same that we understand it TODAY? After all, we are separated in both time and space.

I find that my ability to communicate in writing is often better than in person. I've never been good at knowing the right words to say when someone is standing right there, perhaps silently demanding I come up with something quick, rather than staring vacantly. I need to work on "thinking on my feet." And I absolutely loathe the phone, which doesn't even allow me to gather visual clues, while it demands quick conversation skills.

At times, but in here all we see are words and some expressions. It's really frustrating when you're trying to understand someone else when they use short sentences and expect you to know exactly what they are talking about.

Yes... I'm usually better in writing than in person. In person I tend to be less direct and assertive. And people in my life rarely appreciate my sense of humour.

Yeah... I just usually end up sounding like a troll or a jerk when I try to convey an idea...

Communication is never easy. It's much tougher to communicate well in written words than in face-to-face discussions.
