Once the water starts boiling in my rice cooker, I let it cook for 5-6 minutes. After I put it in a bowl and let it cool for a minute..it gets too thick. Am I cooking it too long?

YES DEFINITELY!! If you are following the instructions on the back and it still seems to thick add just a little more water than it calls for next time. And don't cook them but 1 minute or 1 1/2 at the most uncovered. The longer you cook them the mushier they will get, I like mine al dente or chewy..Then remove from heat & cover let set about 5 minutes. Add a little milk (I add sugar, butter, cinnamon) You can add some dried apples or raisins to the boiling water if you like them.

I think you need to add more water. When I cook oatmeal I just bring the water to boiling and add the oats for about a minute. I stir it then put a lid over the pot and remove it from the fire. I let it sit for about 5-10 minutes to steam. It turns out fine and not gooey or thick. I like butter and honey on mine.Sometimes I add raisins and milk.

I think you may be cooking it too long. It depends on how thick you want it. My kids like theirs thick. But it only takes about 1 minute for the oats to cook in boiling water. You may want to try it between 1 and 3 minutes and see how that works.

just pop it in the microwave with some milk it tastes better that way. If you cook it on the stove cook it until the oatmeal fluffs up a little and is soft and half milk half thick shouldn't be more one than the other.

5-6 sounds okay but maybe you could add more water to make it thinner. Remeber that oatmeal is like a sponge.

Add more water... that'll help to thin it out.
