well...everybody is different, so i guess it depends on the cop........some of them are respectful, helpful, and caring about their job, like all cops should be.
other cops think that they're above the law and they are not...........they can go to jail like anyone else can.....
still, some cops just become cops so they can put people in jail...or because they think its fun....
unlike what most people think, being a police officer is not all fun and games.........its a lot of work too.......and it requires dedication and responsibility.........
if cops think law enforcement as a thrill.....they should not even be cops.........if u become a cop, you should do it to help others.......
if they are on the job too long, yes the power of police officer can go to their head........this however does not happen to cops who deserve their job.......
if u wanna become a cop simply to put people in jail, or just for the fun of it..........JUST GIVE IT UP.......because you will not make a good cop......i'm telling you right now!!!!

It is a stressful job but in my opinion a lot of cops are kids who were not popular and had no power and become police officers to flex the power that comes with having a badge and a gun. I was taking a lot of law classes and things at my college and noticed all the kids in the class wanting to become cops were also campus safety people who took there job way too seriously, tried to act like real cops, adn tried to flex their limited powre in any way they could, even trying to pull you over for tossing a cigg butt out the window or your car. From me they got the middle finger and I floored it, gimme a break...campus safety!!!

assume your question of gone bad refers to corruption ... not a performance issue or a job mismatch situation?
with respect to corruption, i don't know why ... but i know its a problem and it's got to be contained / controlled . Citizens have got to step up / get better protection laws in place.
If a cop goes bad as you put it , he / she should be out . zero tolerance policy. Fire them, charge them with the crimes , let the trail court system sort it out , if convicted the citizens can pull the retirement plans . Use the money to fund bonus for the good cops . We have to raise the stakes / expectations of this office. Only ethical , honest cops are needed. I would expect that we should also be prepared to attract and retain the best candidates. In the business world , I do know you get what you pay for . Money and work environment /benefits are huge motivators. I'd expect that it would work in a police unit. We can't control the sometimes lousy work environment that a police officer has to deal with but we can pay to make the risk / committment to the career more money incentives.

First of all not all cops are bad or go bad. It is like anythig else in life some people get power and it goes to their head look at congress and the senate. How many think they are above the law. I just think when they cross the line they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

JUST AS ANY ORGANIZATION, YOU HAVE THE GOOD AND THE BAD.
WHY ANYONE DOES SOMETHING STUPID IS USUALLY ABOUT MONEY. INVESTIGATIONS HAVE SHOWN THAT WHEN PEOPLE ARE IN DEBT AND NEED MONEY, THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO GET IT.
THE BAD PART IS THAT THEY DO NOT THINK ABOUT THE REPERCUSSIONS.
WHEN THEY HAVE MADE THAT LITTLE EXTRA THEY LIKE CRIMINALS SAY WELL I DID NOT GET CAUGHT? AND THEY SET THEMSELVES UP FOR FAILURE.
THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS THAT WHEN A POLICE OFFICER GETS CAUGHT, IT IS FRONT PAGE NEWS, EQUAL TO ENRON, MICHAEL MILKEN, HEALTH SOUTH ETC..
IT IS LIKE THE MOTORCYCLE BIKERS WHO WEAR THE 1% BADGE OF BAD BOYS. 1% BECOME A TARNISHED STAR.
IT TAKES A LOT OF POLISHING TO TAKE THE TARNISH OFF. WHAT IS REALLY BAD IS THAT AS A PARTNER SOMETIMES YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR SECRETIVE PARTNER WAS DOING AND YOU ARE DRAWN INTO HIS DEMISE AS "WELL YOU MUST HAVE KNOWN WHAT HE WAS DOING YOU TWO HAVE WORKED TOGETHER FOR XX YEARS AND YOU WANT US TO BELIEVE YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE?? THAT IS WHEN IT REALLY HITS HOME HARD. FROM THEN ON YOU WATCH ALL YOUR PARTNERS?? NOT GOOD.

Cops go bad very early in their careers, when they learn that they are in such a position of power and authority, and that no matter what they do wrong, the public still trusts them (as many of these answers prove).
"Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely".

I have been in law enforcement and dealt with law enforcement issues since th middle 80's. I have only seen one instance of a "bad" cop.
We do things that most of you only have nightmares about, then we go home and do our best to shake it off. There are times when we hold more responsibility in our hands than most of you ever will in your entire life.
I do it because I feel that if you expect something out of life, you have to give something.
Bad cops? There are more criminals than there are cops. That is a fact that you cannot deny.
Stop watching so much TV.

I don't think that time on the job has anything to do with it. I don't know any truly "corrupt" officers. I do know some that are not very good at their jobs and they were that way from day one.

I dont believe police officers go bad any more often than anyone else. The problem is, that when a police officer does go bad, it is more pronounced and immediately recognized than say the CEO that embezzles money from a company. POlice work is just like any other job, if you get burned out, you wont be effective anymore.
