Regrettably, I live in this mysterious "Bible Belt." It is a region in the southern U.S. where Christianity runs amok, basically. It's not just a religion ---- it's public policy.

A Bible Belt is an ornate strap of leather on which scriptures have been stamped. It generally has a large bejeweled buckle that often depicts a scene from the Bible that ties in with the particular scriptures stamped on the belt. Easter Bible Belts are the most ornate and can cost many thousands of dollars. There are also Wedding, Christmas, and Every Day Bible Belts. There is a Punishment Bible Belt to be used to keep children in line. These are controversial and are banned by many churches.
The Fundamental Religion are the biggest wearers of Bible Belts. Although others wear them the Fundamentals are the only ones that still publicly condone the use of the Punishment Bible Belt.

Be glad that you don't have a "Bible Belt" in Australia. Basically it is every Southern State below Washington DC which is Maryland, Virginia, North& south Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabam, Mississippi, Louisianna, Texas Arkansas & every state to Texas & beyond that lost in the civil war. It's sort of like everyone turned to religion in the southern states that lost the civil war for ALL of the answers to be found in the Bible. There is nothing wrong with that per se but they take the Bible LITERALLY & every phase to the extreme.Interpretation of bible is very black & white & some churches are also very much segregated. Like god only saves the white christians, etc. It lends itself to racism & narrow minded thinking & much politics is decided at the pulpit. If you are driving in the south all the radio stations are "Christian Stations" & if you are outside of their beliefs they target, boycott & disrupt your businesses.Mostly fundamentalist believers that like to get in yer face & tell you how to live. Good v/s Evil or you are a blashphemer & ya get to go straight to hell. Very biased & sometimes ignorant peoples.Be glad you don't have that in Australia!
I see that your a swimmer so I stuck you in my network. I swim ocean races.

Well, you have Hillsong to give you an upscale idea of the bible belt.
It's basically the southern states, from Texas eastward. Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Tennesseee, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and the two Carolinas.
Toss in Colorado lately.

I'll try to answer, but I am also an Aussie so I might not be entirely correct.
The Bible belt is the lower stretch of America "the south" which has a large percentage of christians
Fundamentalists are religious people who interpret their holy books literally, nothing is metaphorical.

Green with envy ? Really ? This is why I think sometimes USA is no more a democracy but a theocracy. No more freedom of religion. You HAVE to be christian.
Why did the Mayflower leaved England ? Because of the lack of freedom of religion, I remember...

Be happy. Be very happy that you don't have that there. Basically it means that here in the States public policies have to be approved by a large body of bigots and people who think in binary terms (either something is good or bad, no compromise). Also, decisions to go to war are based on God whispering something in the President's ears and on the premise that the world is divided in good and evil (us crhistians be good, them muzlems be evil). Also, we have every right to fully abuse and destroy this planet since it is God given and the "rapture" is nigh anyway.
Now if only I would find a way to convince them to commit mass suicide so they can go to heaven earlier...

Aren't you lucky! The Bible Belt runs through the deep south of the US. Fundamentalist Xians take the Bible literally (every word!) despite its many contradictions. They also believe in "spreading the news" of Jesus and can get rather "in your face" about it. They vote based upon petty moral issues rather than significant matters (abortion, gay marriage) and are generally TOLD how to vote by the ministers (pastors) of their churches.
