Running is horrible on your joints, as you're finding out. Drink plenty of water (to keep joints lubricated and assist in cartilage production), and get better shoes. Then stop running after the marathon!

If there is swelling around the knee, you may need to see a doctor. See a sports doctor, however; a general practitioner likely will neither understand your desire to run nor have the specific knowledge required to assist you to quickly resume running. If the pain is not too severe, a neoprene knee sleeve/brace may help. You may even want to sleep wearing such a brace, as it increases blood flow to the area and speeds healing. I have read that taking 250 mg Vitamin C every 4 hours during the day promotes healing. You might also want to cut back on your mileage and intensity for a while (you have plenty of time until March). Substitute cross-training for some of your runs, if you can do so without pain.
Knee pain can come from too much flexing around the knee. Some of the causes of such flexing may range from shoes that permit your feet to roll too much, running downhill, to tight or weak hamstrings. Try shoes that offer motion-control features; stretch and strengthen your hamstrings; and ease up on or avoid running downhills.
Good luck to you.

Hello... earth to Bobbi.... earth to Bobbi.....

Your grandad would advise you to stop running and seek medical diagnosis for your knee problem. There are other races, other runs. Not running this one will in no way diminish the memory of your grandfather.

Good Luck

Have you tried Glucosamine?

It could possibly make your knees stronger and feel better.

Also, yes, you might need a supporter for you knee.

Keep up the good work and have fun with the marathon!

Cheers
